Tại sao quan trọng

Trong IELTS Speaking Part 3, examiner thường nói những câu như: - "Some people think that technology is ruining communication. What do you think?" - "Do you agree that young people today are less hardworking than previous generations?"

PHẦN 1: ACKNOWLEDGE BEFORE COUNTERING — Ghi nhận trước, phản đối sau

[Acknowledge the view] + [counter/qualification].

Cụm thừa nhận:

Cụm Sắc thái
That's a fair point, but... Trung lập, lịch sự
I can see where that's coming from, but... Thấu hiểu quan điểm đối lập
There's certainly some truth in that, though... Thừa nhận một phần
I understand why people might think that, however... Đồng cảm nhưng không đồng ý
That's one way of looking at it, but I think... Mở ra góc nhìn khác
You could argue that, but on the other hand... Thừa nhận là lập luận hợp lệ

Ví dụ:

Examiner: "Some people say social media is destroying real human connection." "That's a fair point, and I can see why people feel that way. However, I think it's a bit more nuanced than that — for people who live far from family, social media can actually strengthen connections rather than weaken them."

Examiner: "Do you think universities are becoming less valuable?" "I can see where that's coming from — the cost of education is rising while job prospects aren't always guaranteed. That said, I'd argue that university still offers something beyond just job training: the critical thinking and social development are hard to replicate."

To some extent, [agreement]. However / But [qualification].
[Agreement side]. [Limitation or counter].

Cụm partial agreement:

  • "To some extent, I agree — but it's not the whole picture."
  • "I think there's something to that, though it depends on the context."
  • "In some cases, that may be true. But I think it's a generalisation."
  • "You're right that [X] is a problem. But I wouldn't say it's the only factor."
  • "That's partly true, though I'd add that..."

Ví dụ:

Examiner: "Do you think people are too dependent on smartphones?" "To some extent, yes — I think many people, myself included, probably spend more time on their phones than is ideal. But I'd stop short of saying it's a dependency problem for most people. It's more that smartphones have become genuinely necessary for daily life — navigation, banking, communication. The issue, I think, is about balance."

PHẦN 3: SOFT MODAL VERBS — Không đồng ý mà không đối đầu

Sử dụng modal verbs để "hạ nhiệt" sự phản đối:

Cấu trúc:

I'm not sure (that) I would / could / agree with...
I wouldn't say (that)...
I'm not entirely convinced that...

Ví dụ:

  • "I'm not sure I'd go that far — I think it's more complicated."
  • "I wouldn't say technology is ruining society; it's more that we're still adapting to it."
  • "I'm not entirely convinced that stricter laws are the solution — education might be more effective."
  • "I find it hard to agree completely with that view, mainly because..."
  • "I wouldn't necessarily agree — it really depends on the situation."
  • "I'm not sure that's always true, though I can see why people might think so."

PHẦN 4: DISTANCING AND REFRAMING — Chuyển hướng khéo léo

  • "It could be argued that this overlooks a key point: [your counter]."
  • "The issue with that argument is that it assumes [X], which isn't always the case."
  • "That reasoning tends to ignore the fact that [counter]."
  • "I think that view may be oversimplifying a fairly complex issue."

Reframing — Thay đổi góc nhìn:

  • "I think it's less a question of [their frame] and more about [your frame]."
  • "Rather than asking whether [X] is good or bad, I think the real question is [Y]."
  • "I'd frame it slightly differently — it's not so much [their claim] as [your view]."

Ví dụ:

Examiner: "Some argue that governments should ban junk food advertising." "I think it's less a question of banning and more about finding the right level of regulation. A complete ban might seem heavy-handed, but I think the real issue is that children are particularly susceptible to advertising — so perhaps the focus should be on restricting advertising during children's programming rather than banning it outright."

PHẦN 5: MẪU CÂU TRẢ LỜI HOÀN CHỈNH

Mẫu A — Acknowledge + Partial disagree + Reason + Alternative view:

[Acknowledge] + [soft disagreement] + [reason] + [alternative].

Q: "Do you think learning a foreign language in school is a waste of time for some students?" "I understand why some might think that, especially if students never end up using the language. But I'm not sure I'd agree with the idea that it's a waste of time. Even if someone never becomes fluent, learning another language tends to develop problem-solving skills and cultural awareness. I think the real issue is more about how languages are taught — if it's purely grammar and tests, students won't see the value."

Mẫu B — Grant concession + Counter + Reframe:

[Grant that X is true]. [However, counter]. [Reframe the issue].

Q: "Some people say older workers can't adapt to new technology." "There's certainly some truth in the idea that younger people often pick up new technology faster. That said, I'd push back on the generalisation that older workers can't adapt — in my experience, it's often a question of opportunity and training rather than ability. I think the real issue is that companies invest less in training older employees, rather than any inherent limitation."

  • "...and the reason I say this is that..."
  • "...which is supported by the fact that..."
  • "...I think what's more likely is..."
  • "...a better explanation might be..."
  • "...and from what I've seen, this is actually what happens in practice."

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Đồng ý hoàn toàn để tránh khó

  • ❌ "Yes, I agree completely." (mất cơ hội thể hiện tư duy)
  • ✅ "To some extent, yes. But I think there's another side to this..."

Lỗi 2: Phản đối thô lỗ hoặc quá trực tiếp

  • ❌ "No, that's wrong." / "I totally disagree."
  • ✅ "I can see the argument, but I'd suggest that it's more complicated than that."
  • ✅ "I'm not sure I'd agree entirely — I think [nuanced view]."

  • ❌ "I don't think that's right."
  • ✅ "I'm not sure that's entirely accurate, mainly because... / the reason being that..."

Lỗi 4: Mở đầu bằng "Actually" (nghe thách thức)

  • ❌ "Actually, that's not really true."
  • ✅ "I think there's a different way of looking at that — actually, some research suggests..."

(Nếu dùng "actually", đặt nó ở giữa câu, không phải đầu câu)
