Tóm tắt

Câu hỏi IELTS hiếm khi có đáp án một chiều. "Discuss both views", "advantages and disadvantages", hay Part 3 "some people think... others think..." đều đòi cân nhắc hai mặt. Ngữ pháp lập luận cân bằng:

Lập luận cân bằng KHÔNG có nghĩa là không có quan điểm — bạn vẫn nên nghiêng về một bên ở cuối, sau khi đã công nhận bên kia.

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong Writing Task 2 discussion essay, tiêu chí Task Response đòi bạn trình bày cả hai quan điểm trước khi đưa ý kiến. Trong Speaking Part 3, câu trả lời một chiều ("It's just bad, full stop") thể hiện tư duy hạn chế. Cấu trúc cân bằng giúp bạn vừa thể hiện Grammatical Range (cấu trúc tương phản, song song) vừa Coherence (lập luận có tổ chức).

NHÓM 1: ON THE ONE HAND... ON THE OTHER HAND

Khung kinh điển để trình bày hai mặt:

On the one hand, [view A]. On the other hand, [view B].
  • On the one hand, tourism creates jobs and income. On the other hand, it can strain local infrastructure and harm the environment.

Có thể dùng riêng "on the other hand" để giới thiệu mặt đối lập. Lưu ý: "on the other hand" (đối lập) khác "on the other side" (vị trí vật lý).

NHÓM 2: WHILE / ALTHOUGH IT IS TRUE THAT... — nhượng bộ rồi phản biện

Công nhận một điểm của phía kia trước khi đưa quan điểm của mình:

While it is true that [concession], [your stronger point].
Although [concession], [your view].
  • While it is true that social media can spread misinformation, it also gives ordinary people a powerful voice.
  • Although public transport requires heavy investment, the long-term benefits clearly justify the cost.

Đây là cấu trúc "concession" mạnh nhất cho Task 2: cho thấy bạn hiểu phía đối lập nhưng vẫn bảo vệ được quan điểm.

NHÓM 3: ADMITTEDLY, GRANTED, OF COURSE — thừa nhận

Trạng từ/cụm thừa nhận một điểm hợp lý của phía kia:

  • Admittedly, stricter rules would limit some freedoms.
  • Granted, the policy is not perfect.
  • Of course, there are exceptions to this.

Thường theo sau bằng "but / however" để quay lại quan điểm chính: Admittedly, it's expensive, but the benefits outweigh the costs.

NHÓM 4: THAT SAID / THEN AGAIN — đảo hướng lập luận

Dùng để chuyển từ một mặt sang mặt kia một cách mượt mà:

  • The plan has clear benefits. That said, it raises some serious concerns.
  • I'd probably support it. Then again, I can see why others wouldn't.
  • Having said that, the downsides shouldn't be ignored.

Rất tự nhiên trong Speaking Part 3 để thể hiện bạn đang cân nhắc thật sự, không trả lời máy móc.

NHÓM 5: CẤU TRÚC SONG SONG — not only... but also / both... and

Trình bày hai yếu tố cân bằng trong một câu (parallel structure):

not only [X] but also [Y]
both [X] and [Y]
neither [X] nor [Y]
  • The policy is not only expensive but also difficult to enforce.
  • Good education develops both knowledge and character.
  • Neither banning nor ignoring the problem will work.

⚠ Song song về dạng từ: hai vế phải cùng loại (danh từ–danh từ, động từ–động từ). - ❌ not only expensive but also it is hard. → ✅ not only expensive but also hard.

WRITING — bố cục lập luận cân bằng (Task 2)

Khung đoạn discussion:

[Nêu view A + lý do]
On the other hand, [view B + lý do]
While both views have merit, [quan điểm nghiêng của bạn]

Ví dụ: "On the one hand, supporters argue that university should be free, since education is a public good that benefits society as a whole. On the other hand, critics point out that free tuition is costly and may lower standards. While both arguments have merit, I would argue that targeted financial support is more sustainable than blanket free education."

Part 3 example: - Q: "Is it better for children to grow up in the city or the countryside?" - ✅ "Well, there are two sides to this. On one hand, cities offer better schools and opportunities. But then again, the countryside is safer and healthier, with more space to play. It's true that city kids get more exposure, but if you ask me, I'd lean towards the countryside for the early years."

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Chỉ trình bày một mặt khi đề yêu cầu cả hai

  • ❌ Task 2 "discuss both views" nhưng chỉ viết về một bên → mất điểm Task Response.
  • ✅ Luôn dành ít nhất một đoạn cho mỗi quan điểm.

Lỗi 2: "On the one hand" mà không có "on the other hand"

  • ⚠ Nếu mở bằng "On the one hand", phải có mặt đối lập theo sau.

Lỗi 3: Cấu trúc song song lệch dạng

  • ❌ She is both intelligent and works hard.
  • ✅ She is both intelligent and hard-working. / She both studies and works.

Lỗi 4: Cân bằng đến mức không có quan điểm

  • ❌ "Both sides are good and both are bad." (Task 2 vẫn cần ý kiến của bạn)
  • ✅ Công nhận hai mặt, rồi nghiêng về một bên có lý do.
