Tóm tắt

Khả năng diễn đạt mức độ chắc chắn là dấu hiệu của người dùng tiếng Anh trưởng thành. Thay vì "X is true", người Band 7+ nói "X might be true" / "X tends to be true" / "It seems that X". Các công cụ chính:

Nhóm Patterns Độ chắc chắn
Modal verbs might, may, could thấp–trung bình
Trạng từ perhaps, maybe, possibly, probably thấp → cao
Động từ nhận thức seem, appear, tend to quan sát có giới hạn
Cụm rào đón I'm not entirely sure, as far as I know thừa nhận giới hạn hiểu biết
Định lượng mềm some, many, often, in many cases tránh khái quát tuyệt đối

Hedging KHÔNG phải là yếu đuối — nó cho thấy bạn nhận thức được sắc thái và ngoại lệ, điều examiner đánh giá cao ở Speaking Part 3 và Writing Task 2.

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong Speaking Part 3, examiner hỏi câu trừu tượng ("Will robots replace teachers?"). Trả lời tuyệt đối ("Yes, definitely") đóng cuộc hội thoại và dễ sai. Hedging ("They might replace some roles, but it seems unlikely that...") cho phép bạn lập luận có sắc thái. Trong Writing Task 2, khái quát quá đà ("All young people are addicted to phones") là lỗi lập luận; hedging ("Many young people tend to spend excessive time on phones") an toàn và học thuật hơn.

NHÓM 1: MODAL VERBS — might, may, could

S + might/may/could + V (bare)
  • Working from home might improve productivity for some people.
  • This trend could lead to serious social consequences.
  • The policy may not achieve its intended goals.
Modal Sắc thái
might khả năng thấp–trung bình (phổ biến nhất khi hedging)
may giống might, trang trọng hơn một chút
could khả năng / tiềm năng ("có thể dẫn tới")

"Might/may" + have + V-ed để suy đoán về quá khứ: The decline may have been caused by the recession.

NHÓM 2: TRẠNG TỪ CHỈ ĐỘ CHẮC CHẮN

Đặt ở đầu câu hoặc trước động từ chính:

Trạng từ Độ chắc chắn Ví dụ
perhaps / maybe thấp Perhaps the biggest factor is cost.
possibly thấp This is possibly the most effective solution.
probably / likely cao The situation will probably improve.
arguably có thể lập luận rằng This is arguably the best approach.
  • Maybe people are simply too busy to cook these days.
  • Governments will probably have to intervene at some point.

"Maybe" thân mật (đầu câu, hợp Speaking); "perhaps/possibly" trang trọng hơn (hợp Writing).

NHÓM 3: ĐỘNG TỪ NHẬN THỨC — seem, appear, tend to

It seems/appears (that) + clause
S + seems/appears + to V
S + tend(s) to + V
  • It seems that younger people are more open to change.
  • The economy appears to be recovering.
  • People tend to underestimate long-term risks. (quy luật chung, có ngoại lệ)

"Tend to" cực hữu ích để khái quát an toàn: thay "People are lazy" (sai, tuyệt đối) bằng "People tend to avoid effort when they can" (đúng, có sắc thái).

NHÓM 4: CỤM RÀO ĐÓN — thừa nhận giới hạn hiểu biết

  • As far as I know, the policy hasn't changed.
  • I'm not entirely sure, but I'd say it's mainly economic.
  • From what I've read/heard, the situation is improving.
  • It's hard to say for certain, but ...

Trong Speaking, các cụm này vừa hedging vừa mua thời gian suy nghĩ — rất tự nhiên.

NHÓM 5: ĐỊNH LƯỢNG MỀM — tránh khái quát tuyệt đối

Tuyệt đối (rủi ro) Mềm (an toàn)
All / Everyone Many / Most / A lot of people
Always / Never Often / Rarely / In many cases
It is It can be / It is often
  • ❌ Everyone uses social media all the time.
  • Most people use social media fairly regularly.

WRITING — hedging trong Task 2

Quá tuyệt đối (rủi ro): "Banning cars will solve air pollution. Everyone will benefit and the environment will recover completely."

Hedged (học thuật — Band 7+): "Restricting car use could significantly reduce air pollution. Most urban residents would probably benefit from cleaner air, although the environment may take years to recover fully."

Phân tích: could / most / would probably / may / fully — chuyển một tuyên bố ngây thơ thành lập luận cân nhắc.

SPEAKING — hedging tự nhiên trong Part 1 & 3

Trang trọng (Writing) Tự nhiên (Speaking)
It appears that... It kind of seems like...
This may be due to... It's probably because...
People tend to... People usually... / People sort of...
I'm not entirely certain I'm not 100% sure, but...

Part 3 example: - Q: "Will printed books disappear in the future?" - ✅ "Hmm, it's hard to say for sure, but I don't think they'll disappear completely. E-books might take over for things like textbooks, but a lot of people still seem to prefer the feel of a real book — so probably print will shrink rather than vanish."

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Khái quát tuyệt đối

  • ❌ Young people never read books.
  • ✅ Young people tend to read fewer books these days.

Lỗi 2: Lạm dụng "maybe" (lặp đi lặp lại)

  • ❌ "Maybe... maybe... maybe..."
  • ✅ Xen kẽ: perhaps / possibly / it might be / it seems / probably

Lỗi 3: Hedging chồng hedging quá đà

  • ❌ Maybe it might possibly perhaps be true. (loãng nghĩa)
  • ✅ Chọn một lớp hedging: It might be true. / Perhaps it's true.

Lỗi 4: "It seems" + to be thừa

  • ⚠ "It seems that he is tired" / "He seems tired" / "He seems to be tired" đều đúng — nhưng đừng dùng "It seems he seems...".
