So sánh: - ❌ "Technology destroys human relationships." (quá tuyệt đối) - ✅ "Technology tends to undermine human relationships in some cases." (hedged)

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Writing Task 2 — trình bày quan điểm thận trọng:

Đoạn mở đầu:

While it is often argued that technology has improved our lives, it could be suggested that this comes at a social cost. This essay will attempt to examine both perspectives.

Thân bài — đưa ra lập luận:

Online learning appears to offer greater flexibility for working adults. Research suggests that students who study remotely tend to perform as well as, if not better than, their classroom-based peers. However, this may not hold true across all demographics, particularly those without reliable internet access.

Thân bài — thừa nhận góc nhìn khác:

It is widely believed that face-to-face interaction is essential for social development. To some extent, this seems to be supported by psychological research, which indicates that isolation can lead to poorer mental health outcomes.

Kết luận:

On balance, it would appear that a hybrid approach is likely to be the most effective solution. In most cases, policies that combine technological innovation with human-centred design tend to yield the best results.

Writing Task 1 — mô tả dữ liệu không chắc chắn:

  • The figures suggest a correlation between income and education levels.
  • There appears to be a steady upward trend throughout the period.
  • The data may reflect seasonal variation rather than a long-term shift.

Speaking Part 3 — thảo luận ý kiến học thuật:

Thay vì: "Yes, technology is good for education." Dùng: "Well, I think technology tends to be beneficial for education, although it depends on how it's used. For younger learners, it seems that some screen time might actually hinder development rather than help."

Thay vì: "The government should always provide free education." Dùng: "In an ideal world, governments would provide free education for everyone, but the reality is that this may not always be financially feasible. That said, there do appear to be strong economic arguments for subsidising higher education to some degree."

❌ "Definitely, social media is bad for young people." (tuyệt đối, defensible thấp) ✅ "I'd say social media can be problematic for young people, particularly in terms of attention span."

❌ "I strongly agree." (overdone) ✅ "I tend to agree, although I think it depends on the context."

might / could / may:

may Khả năng chung (neutral) This may lead to unemployment.
might Ít chắc hơn "may" The policy might have unintended consequences.
could Khả năng trong số nhiều khả năng Remote work could become the norm.

Dùng trong Part 3:

Q: "Do you think traditional jobs will disappear in the future?" "Some jobs might disappear as automation advances, but I think new types of work will also emerge. It's possible that roles requiring human creativity and emotional intelligence could become even more valuable."

would — Giả thuyết và suy đoán có điều kiện:

  • "Better education would reduce inequality, at least in theory."
  • "If governments invested more, things would likely improve."
  • "I would imagine that most people feel this way."

PHẦN 2: ADVERBS — Đánh dấu mức độ chắc chắn

[Subject] + probably/possibly/perhaps/presumably + [verb phrase]
Perhaps/Possibly, [full sentence].
Trạng từ Mức độ chắc chắn Ví dụ
certainly / definitely Rất chắc (~90%+) This will certainly continue.
probably Khá chắc (~70%) This will probably continue.
likely Khá chắc Change is likely to happen.
possibly / perhaps Không chắc (~50%) This might possibly cause issues.
presumably Suy đoán từ bằng chứng People are presumably more stressed.
conceivably Chỉ là lý thuyết This could conceivably work.

Trong câu trả lời:

  • "Technology will probably continue to change the workplace, though it's hard to predict the exact extent."
  • "Perhaps the most important factor is education — if people are better informed, they tend to make better decisions."
  • "Younger generations are likely more comfortable with change than older ones, though this is a generalisation."

Nhẹ nhàng (I think / I believe):

  • "I think this is gradually changing."
  • "I believe remote work has long-term benefits, though I'm not certain."
  • "I imagine most people would agree, at least to some extent."

Thận trọng hơn:

  • "I suspect the situation is more complex than it first appears."
  • "I would guess that social media plays a significant role, though it's hard to measure."
  • "I get the impression that younger people are more optimistic about this."

Mạnh hơn (nhấn vào sự không chắc):

  • "It's hard to say for certain, but I think..."
  • "I'm not entirely sure, but it seems as though..."
  • "I can't say for certain, though my feeling is that..."

It seems / It appears / It looks as though:

  • "It seems that many young people are delaying home ownership."
  • "It appears that remote work has both benefits and drawbacks."
  • "It looks as though the trend will continue for the foreseeable future."

There is/are + uncertain noun phrases:

  • "There's a possibility that technology could replace many manual jobs."
  • "There's reason to believe that education improves social mobility."
  • "There's some evidence to suggest that social media affects mental health."

Tend to (generalising without absolute claim):

  • "People tend to underestimate the time needed."
  • "Students tend to do better when they have a clear routine."
  • "It tends to depend on the individual."

  • "Some people would argue that social media has done more harm than good."
  • "It could be argued that this policy has had unintended consequences."
  • "Many experts believe this trend will continue, though there's debate on the extent."
  • "It is sometimes claimed that technology makes people less social — though I'm not sure I entirely agree."

PHẦN 6: KẾT HỢP — Câu trả lời Part 3 hoàn chỉnh

Mẫu: Acknowledge uncertainty + give view + reason + qualify

[Uncertainty signal] + [your view]. [Reason/evidence]. [Qualifying remark].

Q: "Do you think social media has had a positive or negative effect on society?" "That's a really difficult question — I think the answer probably depends on how it's used. It seems to me that platforms like Instagram and TikTok can have a genuinely negative impact on self-esteem, particularly for younger users. That said, social media might also be a force for good in terms of connecting communities and spreading awareness. I suspect the long-term effects are something researchers are still trying to fully understand."

Q: "What do you think will happen to traditional retail in the future?" "It's hard to say with any certainty, but I would imagine that physical shops will probably continue to decline, especially those that don't adapt. Presumably, shops that offer an experience — not just products — will survive. But there's also a possibility that people might value in-person shopping more after years of buying everything online. I'm genuinely not sure which way it'll go."

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Nói "I don't know" và dừng lại

  • ❌ "I don't know. It's difficult."
  • ✅ "That's a difficult one. I think it's possible that... though I'm not entirely sure about the extent."

  • ❌ "Technology will destroy all jobs."
  • ✅ "Technology might significantly reduce the number of certain jobs, though it's likely that new roles will also emerge."

Lỗi 3: Quá nhiều "I think" (xem bài overusing-i-think)

  • ❌ "I think... I think... I think..."
  • ✅ "I think... It seems to me... I would imagine... There's reason to believe..."

Lỗi 4: "Maybe" quá nhiều lần liên tiếp

  • ❌ "Maybe it's good. Maybe it's bad. Maybe the government should do something."
  • ✅ "The situation is probably mixed — it seems beneficial in some ways, but there's also reason to think it causes harm. Perhaps the most effective response would be at the policy level."
