Tóm tắt

Hedging là kỹ thuật diễn đạt thận trọng — không phải vì người viết thiếu tự tin, mà vì văn phong học thuật đòi hỏi sự chính xác và khiêm tốn tri thức (epistemic humility).

Loại hedging Ví dụ
Modal verbs may, might, could, would
Verbs thận trọng tends to, appears to, seems to, suggests
Adverbs generally, often, typically, largely
Cấu trúc impersonal It can be argued that, It is widely believed that
Giới hạn phạm vi in many cases, under certain conditions, to some extent

Tại sao quan trọng

Văn phong học thuật không nói tuyệt đối trừ khi đó là sự thật không thể tranh cãi. So sánh:

  • ❌ "Social media destroys family relationships." (quá tuyệt đối)
  • ✅ "Social media can have a negative impact on family relationships in some cases."

may / might — có thể (không chắc chắn)

Subject + may/might + V (base form)
  • Technology may replace many manual jobs within the next decade.
  • Air pollution might be a contributing factor to rising rates of asthma.
  • These changes may not produce the desired results immediately.
  • Economic inequality might worsen if current trends continue.

Phân biệt: "may" nghe hơi chắc hơn "might", nhưng cả hai đều phù hợp trong academic writing.

could — có thể (khả năng về mặt lý thuyết)

Subject + could + V (base form)
  • Increased investment in education could significantly reduce poverty levels.
  • Remote work could lead to both benefits and challenges for employees.
  • This approach could prove more effective than current methods.
  • Stricter regulations could deter foreign investment.

would — có điều kiện (trong ngữ cảnh hypothetical)

Subject + would + V (thường trong câu điều kiện hoặc generalisation)

  • Implementing such a policy would require significant resources.
  • Without adequate funding, the programme would struggle to succeed.

PHẦN 2: VERBS THẬN TRỌNG — Tends to, Appears to, Seems to

  • Economic growth tends to slow during periods of political instability.
  • People tend to underestimate the long-term consequences of their choices.

"Tends to" là một trong những từ hedging đẹp nhất trong academic English — thể hiện rằng đây là xu hướng chung, không phải quy luật tuyệt đối.

appears to / seems to — có vẻ như (dựa trên quan sát)

Subject + appears to / seems to + V
  • The data appears to suggest a correlation between income and health outcomes.
  • Current research seems to support the view that early education is crucial.
  • The policy appears to have had limited impact on long-term behaviour change.
  • Public opinion seems to be shifting in favour of stricter environmental rules.

suggests — ngụ ý, cho thấy (dữ liệu/nghiên cứu)

[Data/Evidence/Research] + suggests (that) + clause
