Tại sao quan trọng

Đây là lỗi rất phổ biến trong Speaking IELTS: thí sinh nói "She told that it was difficult" (thiếu tân ngữ người nghe), hoặc "Can I speak you for a moment?" (thiếu giới từ). Cả bốn động từ đều có cấu trúc riêng — học sai cấu trúc là lỗi ngữ pháp, không chỉ là lỗi từ vựng.

SAY — nói gì, không cần nói với ai

Cấu trúc:

say + something
say + that + clause
say + "trích dẫn trực tiếp"
  • She said it was a great idea. ✅
  • He said that he would be late.
  • "I'm tired," she said.

Khi nào KHÔNG dùng say:

  • ❌ She said me that she was happy.
  • ✅ She told me that she was happy. (cần "me" — dùng tell)

Quy tắc vàng: "Say" không đi kèm tân ngữ chỉ người nghe trực tiếp. Muốn thêm người nghe vào, phải dùng giới từ: say to someone.

  • She said to me that she was happy. ✅ (nhưng nghe trang trọng — thường dùng "told me")

TELL — nói với ai, bắt buộc có người nghe

Cấu trúc:

tell + someone + (that) + clause
tell + someone + to + V
tell + someone + something
  • She told me that she was tired.
  • He told us to wait outside.
  • Can you tell me the way to the station?

Quy tắc vàng: "Tell" luôn luôn đi kèm tân ngữ chỉ người nghe. Nếu không có người nghe, không dùng tell.

Lỗi thường gặp:

  • ❌ She told that the exam was hard.
  • ✅ She said that the exam was hard.
  • ✅ She told me that the exam was hard.

SPEAK — trang trọng hơn, gắn với khả năng ngôn ngữ

Cấu trúc:

speak to/with + someone
speak about/on + topic
speak + language
  • I'd like to speak with the manager, please.
  • She spoke about climate change at the conference.
  • He speaks three languages fluently.
  • Can I speak to Dr. Johnson?

Ngữ cảnh của SPEAK:

  • Formal / professional settings
  • Presentations, speeches, meetings
  • Khả năng dùng ngôn ngữ (speak English, speak Vietnamese)
  • Khi đề cập đến khả năng giao tiếp

Lỗi thường gặp:

  • ❌ Can I speak you for a moment?
  • ✅ Can I speak to you for a moment? (cần giới từ "to")

TALK — thân mật, hội thoại hai chiều

Cấu trúc:

talk to/with + someone
talk about / on + topic

  • Can we talk about this later?
  • She's talking to her friend on the phone.
  • Let's talk about your progress so far.

Ngữ cảnh của TALK:

  • Informal / casual conversations
  • Two-way interaction (không chỉ một chiều)
  • Thảo luận, trao đổi ý kiến

Lỗi 1: "Tell that" — thiếu người nghe

  • ❌ He told that the meeting was cancelled.
  • ✅ He said that the meeting was cancelled.

Lỗi 2: "Speak" không có giới từ

  • ❌ I need to speak you about something.
  • ✅ I need to speak to/with you about something.

Lỗi 3: "Say me"

  • ❌ She said me to stop talking.
  • ✅ She told me to stop talking.

Lỗi 4: Nhầm tell/say trong câu tường thuật

  • ❌ He said me the answer.
  • ✅ He told me the answer.

  • ❌ She talked me about her trip.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Speaking Part 1 (thân mật, dùng talk/say):

  • "My friends and I often talk about music and films."
  • "My teacher said that I should practise more."
  • "I usually talk to my family on the phone every evening."

Speaking Part 2 (kể chuyện):

  • "She told me that the concert was absolutely incredible."
  • "He spoke about his experiences working abroad."
  • "We talked about it for hours — I'll never forget that conversation."

Speaking Part 3 (thảo luận, phân tích):

  • "Politicians need to speak more honestly about these issues."

  • Research suggests / Studies indicate (thay cho "say" trong văn viết trang trọng)
