Tóm tắt

Người học thường dịch thẳng từ tiếng Việt: "làm bài tập" = "make homework". Sai. Quy tắc không phải là dịch nghĩa — mà là học thuộc collocation (từ thường đi kèm nhau).

Tuy nhiên, có một logic chung giúp bạn đoán đúng trong nhiều trường hợp:

Tại sao quan trọng

Sai do/make là lỗi collocation, không phải lỗi ngữ pháp — nhưng bị trừ điểm Lexical Resource trong IELTS. Examiners nghe thấy "make homework" hay "do a decision" ngay lập tức sẽ hạ điểm từ vựng. Người bản ngữ không dùng cách đó.

DO — dùng khi nào?

1. Hoạt động và nhiệm vụ tổng quát

Khi nói đến một hoạt động mà không chỉ rõ tên cụ thể:

  • What are you doing? (Bạn đang làm gì?)
  • She's doing something important.
  • I have a lot to do today.

2. Công việc, nhiệm vụ hàng ngày

  • do homework / housework / the dishes / the laundry / the shopping
  • do your hair / your nails / your makeup
  • do exercise / sport / yoga
  • do a course / a degree / a test / an exam

Lưu ý: "do an exam" = tham gia kỳ thi (the process); "make an exam" = biên soạn đề thi (rất hiếm gặp). Người học thường sai ở điểm này.

3. Công việc nghề nghiệp / kinh doanh

  • do business (with someone)

  • do an interview (for a job)
  • do someone a favour

MAKE — dùng khi nào?

1. Tạo ra / sản xuất thứ gì đó

  • make a cake / coffee / dinner / a sandwich

2. Đưa ra quyết định / ý kiến / lời đề xuất

  • make a decision / a choice

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: "make homework" (lỗi kinh điển)

  • ❌ I need to make my homework before dinner.
  • ✅ I need to do my homework before dinner.

Tại sao sai: Homework là một nhiệm vụ cần thực hiện, không phải thứ bạn tạo ra. Dùng do.

Lỗi 2: "do a decision" / "do a mistake"

  • ❌ She did a decision to quit her job.
  • ✅ She made a decision to quit her job.
  • ❌ He did a serious mistake.
  • ✅ He made a serious mistake.

Tại sao sai: Decision và mistake là outcomes/results — những thứ được "tạo ra". Dùng make.

Lỗi 3: "make research" / "make exercise"

  • ❌ The team made research on consumer behaviour.
  • ✅ The team did research on consumer behaviour.
  • ❌ I try to make exercise every morning.
  • ✅ I try to do exercise every morning.

Tại sao sai: Research và exercise là activities/tasks. Dùng do.

Lỗi 4: "do a noise" / "do a mess"

  • ❌ Please don't do so much noise.
  • ✅ Please don't make so much noise.
  • ❌ My brother always does a mess in the kitchen.
  • ✅ My brother always makes a mess in the kitchen.

Lỗi 5: "do progress" / "do an effort"

  • ❌ Students need to do more progress.
  • ✅ Students need to make more progress.
  • ❌ She did a great effort to finish on time.
  • ✅ She made a great effort to finish on time.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Speaking — dùng tự nhiên trong Part 1 và 3:

Part 1 (Câu hỏi về thói quen): - "I usually do exercise in the morning — mainly jogging or yoga." - "After school I'd do my homework first, then help with the cooking." - "Making friends in a new city is never easy, but joining clubs helps."

Part 3 (Thảo luận ý kiến): - "Governments need to make more effort to invest in education." - "Companies do a lot of research before making major decisions." - "Making a significant difference requires more than just doing small tasks."

Writing Task 2 — lập luận:

  • Individuals can do their part by changing daily habits.
  • Corporations must make more responsible decisions regarding environmental impact.
  • Education systems should do more to prepare students for real-world challenges.
  • Making progress on climate change requires both policy and individual action.
