Tại sao quan trọng

Cả "so" và "such" đều dùng để nhấn mạnh, nhưng rất nhiều học sinh nhầm:

  • ❌ "It was such difficult." (thiếu noun)
  • ❌ "It was so a difficult exam." (so không đứng trước a/an + noun)

Lỗi này xuất hiện ở Band 5-6 và phản ánh người học chưa kiểm soát được cấu trúc cơ bản. Biết dùng đúng "so ... that" và "such ... that" cũng là đặc trưng của Band 7+ trong Writing Task 2.

SO + Tính từ / Trạng từ

"So" bổ nghĩa cho tính từ hoặc trạng từ — không bổ nghĩa trực tiếp cho danh từ.

so + adjective
so + adverb
so + adjective + that + [result clause]

Với tính từ: - The exam was so difficult (that many students failed). - She is so intelligent (that everyone admires her). - The weather was so cold we couldn't go out. - His explanation was so clear I understood immediately.

Với trạng từ: - He spoke so quickly (that I couldn't follow). - She worked so hard she burned out. - Time passed so slowly during the waiting.

Với much / many / few / little (số lượng): - There was so much traffic (that we were late). - She has so many friends. - I have so little time these days. - So few people attended the event.

Lưu ý: "So much" và "so many" đi trước danh từ — nhưng đây vẫn là "so + much/many" (determiner), không phải "such".

SUCH + Cụm danh từ

"Such" đứng trước cụm danh từ — gồm danh từ, có thể có tính từ và mạo từ đi kèm.

such + a/an + adjective + singular noun
such + adjective + plural noun
such + adjective + uncountable noun
such + a/an + noun (không cần adj)

Danh từ đếm được số ít (cần a/an): - It was such a difficult exam (that many students failed). - She is such an intelligent person (that everyone admires her). - He is such a good teacher. - It was such a long day — I'm exhausted. - That was such a great idea!

Danh từ đếm được số nhiều (không có a/an): - They are such talented musicians. - These are such important issues. - We had such great times together.

Danh từ không đếm được (không có a/an): - She showed such courage under pressure. - It was such hard work. - He displayed such patience with the students.

Chỉ có danh từ, không có tính từ: - He is such a genius! - It was such a coincidence that we met here. - She made such a mess.

SO ... THAT và SUCH ... THAT

Cả hai cấu trúc thường đi kèm với "that" để diễn đạt kết quả:

so + adj/adv + that + [result]
such + (a/an) + (adj) + noun + that + [result]
  • The film was so boring that I fell asleep.
  • It was such a boring film that I fell asleep.
  • He spoke so quickly that no one could understand him.
  • He spoke at such a speed that no one could understand.
  • She worked so hard that she finished early.
  • She did such hard work that she finished early.

Ghi nhớ: "that" thường bị bỏ trong văn nói (optional), nhưng nên giữ trong Writing để rõ cấu trúc.

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: "Such" không có danh từ

  • ❌ It was such difficult.
  • ✅ It was so difficult.
  • ✅ It was such a difficult task.

Lỗi 2: "So" trước cụm danh từ

  • ❌ She is so a good student.
  • ✅ She is such a good student.
  • ✅ She is so good (at studying).

Lỗi 3: Quên "a/an" sau "such" với danh từ đếm được số ít

  • ❌ It was such good idea.
  • ✅ It was such a good idea.

Lỗi 4: Dùng "such many / such much"

  • ❌ There were such many people.
  • ✅ There were so many people.
  • ❌ There was such much noise.
  • ✅ There was so much noise.

Lỗi 5: "So" trước danh từ đơn thuần

  • ❌ He is so genius.
  • ✅ He is such a genius.
  • ✅ He is so intelligent.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Speaking — nhấn mạnh cảm xúc tự nhiên:

  • "It was such an incredible experience — I'll never forget it."
  • "The traffic was so bad that I almost missed the exam."
  • "She's such a dedicated teacher that her students always do well."
  • "I was so nervous during my first presentation."

Writing Task 2 — nhấn mạnh luận điểm:

  • "Air pollution has reached such alarming levels that immediate action is required."
  • "The issue is so complex that no single policy can address it fully."
  • "Modern technology has created such rapid change that societies struggle to adapt."
  • "The disparity between rich and poor is so pronounced that social unrest is inevitable."

Writing Task 1 — mô tả biến động:

  • "The increase was so dramatic that it doubled in just five years."
  • "There was such a sharp rise in 2020 that it distorted the overall trend."
