Tại sao quan trọng

Đây là nhóm từ xuất hiện liên tục trong cả 4 kỹ năng IELTS. Lỗi thường gặp:

  • ❌ "I have another options." (another + plural — sai)
  • ❌ "The others people didn't agree." (the others + noun — sai, cần dùng "the other")
  • ❌ "Other thinks it's fine." (other không là đại từ số ít — sai)

Hiểu đúng 5 từ này giúp bạn diễn đạt chính xác và tự nhiên hơn.

1. ANOTHER — thêm một, một khác (không xác định)

"Another" = an + other → luôn dùng với danh từ đếm được số ít.

Có hai nghĩa chính: - Thêm một cái nữa (one more): "Can I have another cup?" - Một cái khác (a different one): "This room is too small. Let's find another one."

another + singular countable noun

Ví dụ: - Would you like another slice of cake? - I need to try another approach — this one isn't working. - She applied to another university after being rejected. - We'll need another hour to finish this. - That's another matter entirely — let's not mix the two.

Dùng "another" như đại từ (không có noun sau): - "This pen doesn't work." — "Here, use another (one)." - I didn't like that idea — do you have another?

Lưu ý: "another" KHÔNG dùng với plural noun hay uncountable noun. - ❌ another people / another information - ✅ other people / other information

2. OTHER — những cái khác (số nhiều hoặc không đếm được)

"Other" là tính từ (determiner) — luôn đứng trước danh từ.

Dùng với: - Danh từ số nhiều (plural countable) - Danh từ không đếm được (uncountable)

other + plural noun
other + uncountable noun

Với plural noun: - Other students in the class performed better. - There are other ways to solve this problem. - She has other plans for the weekend. - Other countries have adopted similar policies. - We considered other options before making a decision.

Với uncountable noun: - I need other information to make my decision. - They discussed other research on the same topic. - Is there other evidence to support this claim?

Dùng "other" như đại từ (số nhiều): - Some students passed; others (= other students) failed. (Khi "other" dùng như đại từ số nhiều, ta thêm -s: "others")

3. THE OTHER — cái còn lại (đã xác định)

"The other" dùng khi nói đến cái còn lại trong một nhóm đã xác định — người nghe biết rõ đang nói đến cái gì.

the other + singular noun (cái còn lại trong hai cái)
the other + plural noun (những cái còn lại đã xác định)

Số ít — trong hai vật/người: - I have two hands. One is hurt, and the other (hand) is fine. - He has two children. One is a doctor; the other is a teacher. - I've visited one of the two museums. I'll visit the other tomorrow.

Số nhiều — trong nhóm đã biết: - Five students came early; the other students arrived late. - Some people agreed; the other people in the room were skeptical. - Two of the candidates were qualified; the other candidates were rejected.

Cụm cố định hay dùng: - on the other hand — mặt khác - the other day — hôm trước (một ngày không xác định gần đây) - in other words — nói cách khác (dùng "other" không có "the") - every other day — cách ngày một

4. OTHERS — những người/vật khác (đại từ)

"Others" là đại từ số nhiều — thay thế cho "other people" hoặc "other things" mà không cần nhắc lại noun.

Others + verb (không theo sau noun)

Ví dụ: - Others may disagree with my opinion. - Some prefer city life; others prefer the countryside. - I finished my work early, but others are still working. - While some technologies create jobs, others eliminate them. - You should consider how your actions affect others.

Lưu ý: "Others" là đại từ — KHÔNG đứng trước danh từ. - ❌ Others people think differently. - ✅ Other people think differently. (dùng "other" khi có noun) - ✅ Others think differently. (đại từ, không có noun)

5. THE OTHERS — những người/vật còn lại (đại từ xác định)

"The others" = the other + people/things (đã biết từ ngữ cảnh) — nói đến phần còn lại trong một nhóm đã xác định.

The others + verb (không theo sau noun)

Ví dụ: - Three students arrived on time. The others were all late. - I've read two of the books. The others are still on my shelf. - Some of the team left early. The others stayed until midnight. - She went ahead; the others followed later. - Two seats are taken. The others are still available.

Lưu ý quan trọng: - "Others" = some other people/things (không xác định, số nhiều) - "The others" = the remaining people/things (đã xác định, biết rõ)

Tình huống 1: Chọn "others" hay "other people"?

  • ✅ Others don't share my view. (đại từ, không có noun)
  • ✅ Other people don't share my view. (có noun sau)
  • ❌ Others people don't share my view. (sai — không thể cả hai)

Tình huống 2: Chọn "the others" hay "the other students"?

  • ✅ The others went home early. (đại từ, đã biết từ ngữ cảnh ai là "the others")
  • ✅ The other students went home early. (có noun, xác định rõ)
  • ❌ The others students went home early. (sai cả hai)

Tình huống 3: Chọn "another" hay "other" với plural?

  • ❌ I need another options.
  • ✅ I need other options. (plural → other)
  • ✅ I need another option. (singular → another)

Tình huống 4: "Another" vs "other" với cùng nghĩa "khác"

  • "I want another coffee." = one more coffee (thêm một ly nữa)
  • "I want a different coffee — another type." = a different one
  • "Let's try other methods." = methods ≠ the ones we tried (plural)

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Speaking Part 3 — so sánh quan điểm:

  • "Some people prioritise career success, while others value family above all else."
  • "On the other hand, there are valid arguments for the opposing view."
  • "There are other factors to consider, such as cultural context."
  • "I've considered this approach, but another solution might work better."

Writing Task 2 — phân tích:

  • "Some governments invest in renewable energy; others continue to rely on fossil fuels."
  • "While one group benefits from globalisation, the other faces economic displacement."
