Tại sao quan trọng

Đây là hai cấu trúc căn bản nhưng rất hay bị nhầm, đặc biệt trong Writing Task 2 và Speaking Part 3:

  • ❌ "It is many problems in today's society." (đang giới thiệu, nên dùng there is)
  • ❌ "There is very important to study." (đang mô tả/nhấn mạnh, nên dùng it is)

Hiểu rõ khi nào dùng cái nào giúp câu văn chính xác và tự nhiên hơn.

THERE IS / THERE ARE — giới thiệu sự tồn tại

Cấu trúc "there is/are" dùng để thông báo rằng ai đó hoặc cái gì đó tồn tại — thường là lần đầu đề cập đến chủ thể đó. "There" ở đây không phải là trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn — nó là chủ ngữ hình thức (dummy/expletive subject).

There is  + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are + plural noun

Giới thiệu sự tồn tại: - There is a problem with this approach. - There are several reasons why people immigrate. - There is some evidence to support this theory. - There are many advantages to living in a city. - There is no easy solution to this issue.

Mô tả một địa điểm: - There is a large park near my house. - There are three universities in this city. - There is a café on the corner.

Nói về sự tồn tại trừu tượng: - There is a strong correlation between education and income. - There are two sides to every argument. - There has been a significant increase in temperatures. - There were many challenges during the project.

Phủ định: - There is no reason to panic. - There are no simple answers. - There isn't enough time.

IT IS / IT'S — mô tả, nhận diện, hoàn cảnh

"It is" dùng khi "it" đại diện cho một thứ đã được đề cập hoặc đã biết, hoặc khi dùng làm chủ ngữ hình thức để nói về thời gian, thời tiết, khoảng cách, hoàn cảnh, hoặc để giới thiệu một mệnh đề adj/that-clause.

It is + adjective
It is + noun phrase (nhận diện)
It is + time / weather / distance
It + is + adjective + to-infinitive / that-clause

1. Mô tả một thứ đã biết

  • It is a beautiful day. (đang mô tả ngày hôm nay)
  • It's a complex issue. (đang mô tả issue đã đề cập)
  • "What is that animal?" — "It is a fox."
  • I watched a film last night. It was really interesting.

2. Nói về thời gian, thời tiết, khoảng cách

  • It is Monday today.
  • It is half past two.
  • It is cold in winter here.
  • It is raining outside.
  • It is about 50 kilometres from here.

3. Chủ ngữ hình thức trước to-infinitive hoặc that-clause

It is + adj + to-infinitive
It is + adj + that + clause
  • It is important to study regularly.
  • It is difficult to predict the future.
  • It is clear that climate change is a major threat.
  • It is widely believed that education is the key to success.
  • It is essential that students attend all classes.

Đây là cấu trúc cực kỳ phổ biến trong IELTS Writing Task 2 — thay vì viết "To study regularly is important", viết "It is important to study regularly" nghe tự nhiên và học thuật hơn.

4. Nhấn mạnh — Cleft sentence

  • It is the government that should take responsibility.
  • It was in 2020 that the pandemic began.
  • It is education that makes the biggest difference.

THERE IS vs. THEY ARE — thêm một sự nhầm lẫn phổ biến

Nhiều học sinh nhầm "there are" với "they are":

  • There are two solutions to this problem. → (giới thiệu lần đầu)

  • They are both effective. → (mô tả hai giải pháp vừa nêu)

  • There are three main causes. → (giới thiệu)

  • They are pollution, deforestation, and overpopulation. → (liệt kê)

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Dùng "it is" khi giới thiệu sự tồn tại

  • ❌ It is a book on the table.
  • ✅ There is a book on the table.
  • ✅ It is a book. (trả lời câu hỏi "Cái gì đó là gì?")

Lỗi 2: Dùng "there is" khi muốn mô tả

  • ❌ There is very important to recycle.
  • ✅ It is very important to recycle.

Lỗi 3: "There is" với plural noun

  • ❌ There is many problems.
  • ✅ There are many problems.
  • ✅ There is a problem.

Lỗi 4: Bỏ "there" hoặc "it"

  • ❌ Is a park near my house.
  • ✅ There is a park near my house.
  • ❌ Is important to be honest.
  • ✅ It is important to be honest.

Lỗi 5: "There is" với trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn — nhầm nghĩa

  • "There is a cat." = Có một con mèo (tồn tại)
  • "The cat is over there." = Con mèo ở đằng kia (chỉ nơi chốn)

Khi "there" chỉ nơi chốn, nó là trạng từ, không phải chủ ngữ hình thức.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Writing Task 2 — mở bài và thân bài:

  • "There are several reasons why urbanisation is accelerating."
  • "It is widely acknowledged that education is fundamental to development."
  • "There is no doubt that technology has transformed modern life."
  • "It is important to consider both the advantages and disadvantages."
  • "There are strong arguments both for and against this view."

Writing Task 1 — mô tả biểu đồ:

  • "It is clear that sales peaked in 2020."
  • "There was a significant increase in the early years."
  • "There are three main categories shown in the chart."
  • "It is notable that the figures for Europe are consistently higher."

Speaking Part 1 — mô tả nơi sống:
