Many vs Much

Many — đếm được, số nhiều

many + countable plural noun
  • Many students struggle with academic writing.
  • There are many factors contributing to unemployment.
  • How many people attended the event?

Much — không đếm được

much + uncountable noun
  • Much research has been conducted in this area.
  • There isn't much time left.
  • How much money was spent?

Lưu ý: "Much" thường dùng trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi. Trong câu khẳng định, ưu tiên "a lot of" hoặc "a great deal of": - ❌ Much research supports this view. (nghe cứng trong văn thông thường) - ✅ A great deal of research supports this view. (học thuật hơn) - ✅ Much of the research supports this view. (chấp nhận được trong academic writing)

Few vs Little — Âm tính (ít đến mức thiếu)

Few — countable, mang nghĩa âm tính

few + countable plural noun = "không đủ / quá ít"
  • Few governments have successfully implemented this policy. (Rất ít — ngụ ý đáng tiếc)
  • Few people are aware of this problem.
  • There are few solutions to this crisis.

Little — uncountable, mang nghĩa âm tính

little + uncountable noun = "không đủ / quá ít"
  • There is little evidence to support this claim. (Gần như không có bằng chứng)
  • Little progress has been made in recent years.
  • He showed little interest in the project.

A few vs A little — Dương tính (có một ít)

A few — countable, dương tính

a few + countable plural noun = "có một chút — đủ dùng"
  • I have a few suggestions for improving this. (có vài gợi ý)
  • Let me give you a few examples.
  • She needed a few days to recover.

A little — uncountable, dương tính

a little + uncountable noun = "có một ít — đủ dùng"
  • Could you give me a little more time? (xin thêm một chút thời gian)
  • There is a little hope remaining.
  • I have a little experience in this field.

Some vs Any

Some — khẳng định, đề nghị, mời mọc

  • Some countries have adopted this approach. (một số nước)
  • Would you like some water? (mời/đề nghị)
  • Some students find writing difficult.

Any — phủ định, câu hỏi, điều kiện

  • Are there any questions? (câu hỏi)
  • There aren't any exceptions. (phủ định)
  • If you have any concerns, let me know. (điều kiện)

Any trong câu khẳng định = "bất kỳ": - You can ask any question you like. - Any country can participate.

Ví dụ viết lại:

Quantifiers quan trọng khác

Several — một số (nhiều hơn a few, ít hơn many)

Chỉ dùng với countable plural:

  • There are several reasons for this trend.
  • Several studies have reached similar conclusions.
  • The policy has several notable weaknesses.

Plenty of — đủ nhiều, thừa thãi

Dùng với cả countable và uncountable:

  • There is plenty of time before the deadline.
  • There are plenty of opportunities available.
  • She has plenty of experience in this field.

A number of — một số (tương đương "some/several")

Dùng với countable plural, động từ số nhiều:

  • A number of students have raised this concern. (students → động từ số nhiều)
  • A number of factors contribute to this problem.

Phân biệt "the number of" vs "a number of": - The number of students is increasing. (số lượng → số ít) - A number of students are struggling. (một số học sinh → số nhiều)

The majority of / A minority of

  • The majority of participants agreed with the proposal.
  • A minority of people remain opposed.

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Dùng "many" với uncountable

  • ❌ There is many evidence to support this.
  • ✅ There is much evidence / a great deal of evidence to support this.
  • ❌ Many information has been gathered.
  • Much information / A great deal of information has been gathered.

Lỗi 2: Dùng "much" với countable

  • ❌ There are much students in the class.
  • ✅ There are many students in the class.
  • ❌ We need much more workers.
  • ✅ We need many more workers.

Lỗi 3: Nhầm "few" và "a few"

  • ❌ The situation is positive — few solutions exist. (ngụ ý không đủ)
  • ✅ The situation is positive — a few solutions exist.
  • ❌ The outlook is bleak but a few alternatives remain. (cần nhấn mạnh tính âm tính)
  • ✅ The outlook is bleak but few alternatives remain.

Lỗi 4: "A number of" + singular verb

  • ❌ A number of students is struggling.
  • ✅ A number of students are struggling. (subject thực là "students")

Lỗi 5: "Several" với uncountable

  • ❌ There is several evidence...
  • ✅ There is some evidence... / There are several pieces of evidence...
