Tại sao quan trọng
Trong IELTS Writing, dùng "a lot of" quá nhiều làm giảm điểm Lexical Resource vì nó mang tính informal. Examiner muốn thấy bạn biết phân biệt và sử dụng đa dạng: many, much, a great deal of, numerous, a significant number of. Trong Speaking, "a lot of" hoàn toàn tự nhiên.
PHẦN 1: MANY — Dùng với danh từ đếm được số nhiều
many + countable noun (plural)
Với danh từ đếm được: - Many students struggle with time management. - She has many responsibilities at work. - There are many reasons why this policy may fail. - I don't have many friends in this city. - How many people attended the event?
Vị trí trong câu: - Câu khẳng định: "There are many advantages." - Câu phủ định: "There aren't many options left." - Câu hỏi: "How many times have you visited?"
Lưu ý: "many" có thể đứng một mình như đại từ: "Many of the students passed." / "Many have tried, but few have succeeded."
PHẦN 2: MUCH — Dùng với danh từ không đếm được
much + uncountable noun
Với danh từ không đếm được: - She doesn't have much time to prepare. - There isn't much water left in the bottle. - He showed much patience throughout the process. - How much money do you need? - We haven't made much progress.
Lưu ý quan trọng: Trong câu khẳng định, "much" nghe hơi formal/cứng khi đứng một mình: - ❌ (informal) "I have much work to do." (sounds unnatural in speech) - ✅ "I have a lot of work to do." (natural spoken) - ✅ "There is much to be done." (formal/written)
Trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi, "much" rất tự nhiên: "I don't have much time."
PHẦN 3: A LOT OF / LOTS OF — Dùng được cả hai
a lot of / lots of + countable (plural) OR uncountable noun
Với đếm được: - A lot of students are applying for the scholarship. - She has lots of ideas for the project.
Với không đếm được: - He spends a lot of time on social media. - There is lots of information available online.
A lot of vs. Lots of: - Về nghĩa: tương đương nhau - "Lots of" hơi informal hơn "a lot of" một chút - Cả hai thích hợp cho speaking và informal writing, tránh trong IELTS Task 2

PHẦN 4: TOO MANY / TOO MUCH — Quá nhiều (tiêu cực)
"Too" thêm nghĩa tiêu cực — quá nhiều đến mức có vấn đề:
too many + countable plural (negative)
too much + uncountable (negative)
- There are too many cars on the road. (gây tắc đường)
- She has too many responsibilities. (quá tải)
- He spends too much time playing video games.
- There is too much noise in the office.
- Too much screen time can harm children's eyesight.
So sánh: "She has many responsibilities." (trung tính) vs. "She has too many responsibilities." (quá tải)
PHẦN 5: SO MANY / SO MUCH — Rất nhiều (nhấn mạnh, thường ngạc nhiên)
so many + countable plural (emphasis)
so much + uncountable (emphasis)
- There are so many things to consider.
- I had so much fun at the festival.
- She showed so much courage in a difficult situation.
- There were so many people at the event that we couldn't get in.
- I have so much work this week — I don't know where to start.

Lưu ý thực tế: "How much?" cũng dùng để hỏi giá tiền — đây là dạng rút gọn của "How much does it cost?"
