Many — đếm được, số nhiều

Much — không đếm được

Lưu ý: "Much" thường dùng trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi. Trong câu khẳng định, ưu tiên "a lot of" hoặc "a great deal of": - ❌ Much research supports this view. (nghe cứng trong văn thông thường) - ✅ A great deal of research supports this view. (học thuật hơn) - ✅ Much of the research supports this view. (chấp nhận được trong academic writing)

Few vs Little — Âm tính (ít đến mức thiếu)

Few — countable, mang nghĩa âm tính

few + countable plural noun = "không đủ / quá ít"

• Few governments have successfully implemented this policy. (Rất ít — ngụ ý đáng tiếc)
• Few people are aware of this problem.
• There are few solutions to this crisis.

Little — uncountable, mang nghĩa âm tính

little + uncountable noun = "không đủ / quá ít"

• There is little evidence to support this claim. (Gần như không có bằng chứng)

A few vs A little — Dương tính (có một ít)

A few — countable, dương tính

a few + countable plural noun = "có một chút — đủ dùng"

Any trong câu khẳng định = "bất kỳ": - You can ask any question you like. - Any country can participate.

Khi nào không chắc: tra từ điển có ghi [U] (uncountable) hay [C] (countable). Một số từ là cả hai tùy nghĩa: "a coffee" = một ly cà phê; "coffee" = cà phê (chất).

Countable noun = danh từ có thể đếm được, có dạng số nhiều (book → books). Uncountable noun = danh từ không đếm được, không có dạng số nhiều (water, advice, information).

Phân biệt countable và uncountable là nền tảng để dùng đúng: - Mạo từ a/an: Chỉ dùng với countable nouns số ít (a book, an idea) - Số nhiều: Chỉ countable nouns mới có hình thức số nhiều (books, không có advices) - Quantifiers: many dùng cho countable, much dùng cho uncountable

Trong IELTS Writing/Speaking: - ❌ Sai: "She gave me an advice." / "I need some informations." - ✅ Đúng: "She gave me some advice." / "I need some information."

Lỗi này rất phổ biến và bị giám khảo chú ý ngay lập tức. Sửa được lỗi này = tăng điểm Grammatical Range & Accuracy ngay.

Định nghĩa

Countable Noun (Danh từ đếm được)

Danh từ chỉ những thứ có thể đếm thành từng đơn vị rời rạc. Có hai dạng: số ít và số nhiều.

• one book, two books → Đếm được từng quyển
• a city, three cities → Đếm được từng thành phố
• an idea, several ideas → Đếm được từng ý tưởng

Uncountable Noun (Danh từ không đếm được)

Danh từ chỉ những thứ không thể tách thành đơn vị rời rạc — thường là chất liệu, khái niệm trừu tượng, hoặc tập hợp.

• water, milk, rice → Không thể đếm từng đơn vị
• advice, information, knowledge → Khái niệm trừu tượng, không đếm được
• furniture, luggage, equipment → Tập hợp, dùng như một khối

Với uncountable nouns: - Không dùng a/an bao giờ - Không cần mạo từ khi nói chung chung: Water is essential. / Advice is valuable. - Dùng the khi nói về thứ cụ thể: The water in this bottle is cold.

3. Đo lường uncountable nouns

Khi cần nói số lượng cụ thể, dùng "a unit of + uncountable noun":

Danh sách từ "bẫy" thường gặp (uncountable nhưng người học hay dùng sai):

✅ Tất cả các từ trên đều là uncountable — không có dạng số nhiều.

Câu 1:

"The government needs more information about the number of people affected."

• information → Uncountable → dùng more (không phải more informations)
• number → Countable → dùng the number of (có thể đếm con số)
• people → Countable plural (irregular: person → people)

Câu 2:

"She gave me some useful advice and a few helpful suggestions."

• advice → Uncountable → some advice ✅ (không phải an advice hay advices)

(Writing Task 2): "Although the government has allocated a large amount of money and significant resources to the project, there has been little progress due to a lack of evidence-based planning."

Lỗi 1: Thêm -s vào uncountable nouns

• ❌ SAI: I received some helpful advices.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: I received some helpful advice.
• ❌ SAI: He gave me three informations.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: He gave me three pieces of information.
• TẠI SAO: Uncountable nouns không có dạng số nhiều trong tiếng Anh, dù trong tiếng Việt ta vẫn có thể nói "những thông tin" (dùng từ phân loại "những").

Lỗi 2: Dùng a/an với uncountable nouns

• ❌ SAI: Can you give me an advice?
• ✅ ĐÚNG: Can you give me some advice? / Can you give me a piece of advice?
• ❌ SAI: I need an equipment for the experiment.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: I need some equipment for the experiment.
• TẠI SAO: a/an = "một", nghĩa là "đếm được". Uncountable nouns không đếm được đơn vị.

Lỗi 3: Dùng many/few với uncountable, much/little với countable

• ❌ SAI: We don't have many time. / There is much students in the class.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: We don't have much time. / There are many students in the class.
• TẠI SAO: many/few đi với countable; much/little đi với uncountable. Nhầm lẫn này rất phổ biến ở người học tiếng Việt vì tiếng Việt dùng "nhiều" cho cả hai.

Lỗi 4: Chia động từ số nhiều cho uncountable nouns

• ❌ SAI: The information are available online.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: The information is available online.
• ❌ SAI: The news are shocking.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: The news is shocking.
• TẠI SAO: Uncountable nouns luôn dùng động từ số ít, kể cả khi chúng kết thúc bằng -s (news, mathematics, physics).

Lỗi 5: Nhầm nghĩa countable/uncountable cùng từ

• ❌ SAI: She has many experiences in management. (nếu ý muốn nói về kinh nghiệm nói chung)
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She has a lot of experience in management.
• ✅ CŨNG ĐÚNG (nghĩa khác): She had many interesting experiences during her trip. (những trải nghiệm cụ thể)
• TẠI SAO: experience (uncountable) = kinh nghiệm, kỹ năng; an experience (countable) = một trải nghiệm cụ thể.

Lưu ý cho người học Việt Nam

Tiếng Việt không phân biệt countable/uncountable — "những thông tin", "nhiều thông tin", "một thông tin" đều tự nhiên. Tiếng Anh buộc phải phân loại ngay từ trong cấu trúc ngữ pháp.

Mẹo nhớ các uncountable nouns phổ biến:

1. Khái niệm trừu tượng thường uncountable: love, hate, beauty, freedom, knowledge, information, advice, progress, evidence, research, education
2. Tập hợp đồ vật thường uncountable: furniture, luggage, equipment, clothing, machinery
3. Môn học kết thúc -ics luôn uncountable: mathematics, physics, economics, politics, athletics
4. Tin tức, dữ liệu uncountable: news, data, feedback, evidence
5. "Tiền" không đếm được: money là uncountable (some money, không phải a money)

Khi nói về con số và số lượng: - "There are many reasons why..." (reasons = countable) - "There is a lot of evidence that..." (evidence = uncountable) - "She has a great deal of knowledge about..." (knowledge = uncountable) - "We need a few more minutes to..." (minutes = countable)

IELTS Writing — Dùng đúng trong câu Academic

Band 5 (lỗi điển hình):

"The researches show that many furnitures in offices are poorly designed. This give workers less comforts."

Band 7+ (đúng):

"Research shows that much of the furniture in modern offices is poorly designed. This gives workers less comfort and reduces productivity."

Sự thay đổi: researches → research, many furnitures → much of the furniture, comforts → comfort — 3 lỗi countable/uncountable phổ biến được sửa.

Đối chiếu với tiếng Việt — Loại từ vs inflection

Tiếng Việt dùng loại từ (classifier) để đếm danh từ — "con bò", "cái bàn", "quyển sách". Loại từ là từ chỉ loại danh từ thuộc loại nào, đặt giữa số đếm và danh từ. Danh từ tự thân không đổi hình.

Tiếng Anh không có classifier mà inflect chính danh từ: "one cow", "two cows". Với uncountable, tiếng Anh dùng partitive ("a piece of", "a glass of") — tương đương loại từ tiếng Việt nhưng chỉ áp dụng cho uncountable.

Hệ quả cho người Việt: Khi gặp danh từ mới trong English, đừng tự động cho rằng có thể đếm. Có rất nhiều khái niệm tiếng Việt đếm được (thông tin, lời khuyên, đồ đạc) nhưng tiếng Anh không đếm được:
