THERE IS / THERE ARE — giới thiệu sự tồn tại

Cấu trúc "there is/are" dùng để thông báo rằng ai đó hoặc cái gì đó tồn tại — thường là lần đầu đề cập đến chủ thể đó. "There" ở đây không phải là trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn — nó là chủ ngữ hình thức (dummy/expletive subject).

There is  + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are + plural noun

Giới thiệu sự tồn tại: - There is a problem with this approach. - There are several reasons why people immigrate. - There is some evidence to support this theory. - There are many advantages to living in a city. - There is no easy solution to this issue.

Mô tả một địa điểm: - There is a large park near my house. - There are three universities in this city. - There is a café on the corner.

IT IS / IT'S — mô tả, nhận diện, hoàn cảnh

"It is" dùng khi "it" đại diện cho một thứ đã được đề cập hoặc đã biết, hoặc khi dùng làm chủ ngữ hình thức để nói về thời gian, thời tiết, khoảng cách, hoàn cảnh, hoặc để giới thiệu một mệnh đề adj/that-clause.

It is + adjective
It is + noun phrase (nhận diện)
It is + time / weather / distance
It + is + adjective + to-infinitive / that-clause

1. Mô tả một thứ đã biết

• It is a beautiful day. (đang mô tả ngày hôm nay)
• It's a complex issue. (đang mô tả issue đã đề cập)
• "What is that animal?" — "It is a fox."
• I watched a film last night. It was really interesting.

2. Nói về thời gian, thời tiết, khoảng cách

• It is Monday today.
• It is half past two.
• It is cold in winter here.
• It is raining outside.
• It is about 50 kilometres from here.

3. Chủ ngữ hình thức trước to-infinitive hoặc that-clause

Khi "there" chỉ nơi chốn, nó là trạng từ, không phải chủ ngữ hình thức.

Tại sao quan trọng

Đây là một trong những cấu trúc được dùng nhiều nhất trong tiếng Anh. Trong IELTS Speaking Part 1, bạn hay dùng nó để mô tả nhà, khu phố, thành phố. Trong Writing Task 1, dùng để mô tả biểu đồ hoặc hình ảnh.

Lỗi phổ biến nhất: dùng "there is" cho danh từ số nhiều, hoặc nhầm "there" với "their" (của họ) và "they're" (they are).

1. Giới thiệu sự tồn tại lần đầu (First mention)

Dùng "there is/are" khi giới thiệu một thứ mà người nghe chưa biết:

• There is a new café on this street. (→ bạn đang giới thiệu cái mới)
• The café is on this street. (→ cả hai đã biết cái café đó rồi)

Ví dụ phân biệt: - "There's a famous museum in this city." (người nghe chưa biết) - "The museum is near the city centre." (cả hai đã biết museum đó)

2. Mô tả nơi chốn hoặc tình huống

• There are so many people in this city.
• There's not much time left — let's hurry!
• Is there anything I can do to help?
• There were about 50 guests at the party.
• In Vietnam, there are many temples and pagodas.

3. Kết hợp với quantifiers

5. Nhấn mạnh sự kiện hoặc tình trạng

Dùng "there is/are" để đưa thông tin mới hoặc quan trọng lên phía trước:

Thay vì: "Many problems exist in this area." Tự nhiên hơn: "There are many problems in this area."

Dấu hiệu nhận biết

Dùng "There is/are" khi: 1. Bạn muốn nêu sự tồn tại của ai/cái gì đó 2. Bạn giới thiệu danh từ lần đầu 3. Bạn muốn nhấn mạnh "sự tồn tại" chứ không phải "vị trí"

Không dùng khi: - Bạn muốn nêu vị trí của thứ đã biết: "The book is on the table" (không phải "there is") - Bạn nêu danh từ đã xác định: "My brother is a doctor" (không phải "there is")

Lỗi 1: Dùng "there is" cho danh từ số nhiều

• ❌ There is many problems in this city.
• ✅ There are many problems in this city.
• Tại sao: "problems" là số nhiều nên dùng "there are".

Lỗi 2: Nhầm "there/their/they're"

• ❌ Their is a problem. / They're is a problem.
• ✅ There is a problem.
• Tại sao:
• "there" = nơi chốn / cấu trúc giới thiệu sự tồn tại
• "their" = của họ (sở hữu)
• "they're" = they are

Ví dụ phân biệt: - "There is a book on their table." (there = cấu trúc; their = sở hữu) - "They're here. There is food for everyone." (they're = they are; there = cấu trúc)

Lỗi 3: Bỏ "there", dùng "is/are" trực tiếp

• ❌ Is a book on the table.
• ✅ There is a book on the table.
• Tại sao: Tiếng Việt nói "Có một cuốn sách..." — tiếng Anh phải có "there".

Lỗi 4: Chia "there are" theo danh từ gần nhất khi có nhiều vật

Khi có danh sách danh từ hỗn hợp, chia theo danh từ đầu tiên:

• There is a pen and two books on the desk. (pen → is) ✅
• There are two books and a pen on the desk. (books → are) ✅

Cả hai đều được chấp nhận — chọn một và nhất quán.

Lỗi 5: Nhầm giữa "there is" và "it is"

• ❌ "It is a library near my house." (sai — không có library làm chủ ngữ thực)
• ✅ "There is a library near my house."
• ❌ "There is that the problem is serious." (sai — câu phức)
• ✅ "It is serious." / "The problem is serious."

Quy tắc: Dùng "there is/are" khi chưa xác định danh từ; dùng "it is" khi nói về đối tượng cụ thể hoặc mệnh đề.

Question: "What's your accommodation like?" Answer: "I live in an apartment in District 1. There are three bedrooms and a large living room. There's a kitchen and two bathrooms. There isn't a garden, but there's a small balcony overlooking the street."

Question: "What facilities are there in your neighborhood?" Answer: "Well, there are quite a few coffee shops nearby, which I really like. There's also a supermarket and a local market. However, there isn't a gym within walking distance, which is a shame."

Part 2 — Mô tả nơi bạn thích

Sample Answer: "I'd like to talk about a small town I visited. The thing that impressed me most was that there were barely any high-rise buildings.
