Tại sao quan trọng

Dùng sai mạo từ với địa danh là lỗi rất phổ biến trong IELTS Writing Band 5-6. Câu như "I visited the France last summer" hay "The Tokyo is one of the world's largest cities" ngay lập tức bị trừ điểm Lexical Resource. Với địa danh, không có quy tắc ngữ pháp tuyệt đối — cần học theo nhóm.

NHÓM 1: Quốc gia

Không dùng THE — quốc gia tên đơn

Phần lớn quốc gia không dùng "the":

  • ∅ Vietnam, ∅ France, ∅ Germany, ∅ Japan
  • ∅ Australia, ∅ Brazil, ∅ China, ∅ India
  • ∅ Mexico, ∅ Canada, ∅ Spain, ∅ Italy

Ví dụ câu: - I was born in ∅ Vietnam. - She studied in ∅ Australia for three years. - ∅ Japan has one of the world's most advanced economies.

Dùng THE — quốc gia có "United", "Republic", "Kingdom", số nhiều

Dùng "the" khi tên quốc gia: - Chứa từ United, Republic, Kingdom, Federation, Union, States - Là số nhiều (plural)

Không dùng THE — núi đơn lẻ

Tên núi đơn lẻ không dùng the — thường có "Mount" hoặc "Mt." trước:

  • ∅ Mount Everest, ∅ Mount Fuji, ∅ Mount Kilimanjaro
  • ∅ Everest, ∅ Fuji (khi viết không có "Mount")
  • ∅ Ben Nevis (Scotland — không có "Mount")

Dùng THE — dãy núi (mountain ranges)

Dãy núi số nhiều dùng THE:

  • the Alps, the Himalayas, the Andes, the Rockies
  • the Pyrenees, the Carpathians, the Atlas Mountains

NHÓM 5: Hồ

Không dùng THE — hồ đơn lẻ (thường có "Lake" trước)

Dùng THE — nhóm hồ

  • the Great Lakes (nhóm 5 hồ lớn ở Bắc Mỹ)

Sa mạc — dùng THE

Bán đảo — thường dùng THE

  • the Korean Peninsula, the Iberian Peninsula, the Arabian Peninsula

NHÓM 7: Thành phố, Làng, Quận

Thành phố, làng, quận không dùng the:

  • ∅ Paris, ∅ Hanoi, ∅ Tokyo, ∅ New York
  • ∅ Silicon Valley, ∅ Brooklyn, ∅ Westminster

Ngoại lệ phổ biến nhất — The Hague (La Hay, Hà Lan): - I attended a conference at the Hague. (trường hợp đặc biệt — tên lịch sử)

NHÓM 8: Đường phố, Đại lộ, Quảng trường

Không dùng THE (phổ biến hơn):

  • ∅ Oxford Street, ∅ Fifth Avenue, ∅ Downing Street
  • ∅ Broadway, ∅ Times Square, ∅ Trafalgar Square

Dùng THE (một số trường hợp đặc biệt):

  • the High Street (tên chung cho phố chính ở UK)
  • the Mall (Washington DC)
  • the Strand (London)

NHÓM 9: Tên công trình, tòa nhà, tổ chức

Dùng THE — nhiều công trình nổi tiếng:

  • the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall (of China)
  • the White House, the Kremlin
  • the United Nations, the World Health Organisation

Không dùng THE — tên riêng không có danh từ chung:

  • ∅ Buckingham Palace (có "Palace" nhưng là tên riêng, thường không cần the)
  • ∅ Disneyland, ∅ Hollywood

Lưu ý thực tế: Tòa nhà có mạo từ là "the" khi cấu trúc tên dạng "the + descriptive + noun": the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall. Tòa nhà có tên riêng không có descriptor thường không dùng the.

Lỗi 5: Nhầm "Lake [Name]" và "[Name] River"

  • Lake + name → no the: ∅ Lake Geneva
