Tại sao quan trọng

Tiếng Việt không có mạo từ — đây là lý do người Việt mắc lỗi articles nhiều nhất. Examiners IELTS đặc biệt chú ý đến article errors vì chúng xuất hiện trong hầu hết mọi câu và ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến Grammatical Accuracy (GRA).

Quy tắc cơ bản

Khi dùng "a / an"

1. Lần đầu tiên nhắc đến một vật: - I saw a dog in the park. The dog was barking loudly. (lần 2 → "the")

2. Danh từ đếm được số ít, không xác định: - She's looking for a job. - He wants to buy a new laptop.

3. Phân loại, nghề nghiệp: - She is a doctor. - He wants to become an engineer.

4. "a" vs "an" — theo ÂM THANH (không phải chữ cái):

Khi dùng "the"

1. Đã nhắc đến trước: - I bought a book. The book was really interesting.

2. Người nghe/đọc biết đang nói đến cái gì: - Can you close the door? (cái cửa trong phòng này) - The president gave a speech. (tổng thống — ai cũng biết là ai)

3. Duy nhất (unique) trên thế giới: - the sun, the moon, the earth, the sky, the internet, the government

4. Superlative và thứ tự (ordinal numbers): - She's the most intelligent student in class. - This is the first time I've visited London. - He was the only person who understood.

5. Nhạc cụ khi nói về việc chơi: - She plays the piano / the guitar / the violin.

6. Biển, sông, núi theo nhóm, tên quốc gia số nhiều: - the Amazon, the Pacific Ocean, the Alps - the United States, the Netherlands, the Philippines

Khi không dùng mạo từ (Zero Article ∅)

1. Danh từ số nhiều mang nghĩa chung: - ∅ Dogs are loyal animals. (chó nói chung) - ∅ Children need love and care.

2. Danh từ không đếm được mang nghĩa chung: - ∅ Water is essential for life. - ∅ Pollution is a major problem. - I love ∅ music.

3. Tên người, tên riêng: - ∅ Vietnam is in Southeast Asia. (nhưng: the United States) - ∅ London is expensive. (nhưng: the Hague)

4. Bữa ăn, môn thể thao, ngôn ngữ: - I had ∅ breakfast at 7am. - She plays ∅ tennis every weekend. - He speaks ∅ Vietnamese fluently.

5. Trường học, nhà thờ, bệnh viện (khi dùng với mục đích chức năng): - She's in ∅ hospital. (đang là bệnh nhân — British English) - He goes to ∅ university next year. (đi học) - Nhưng: The hospital is on the left. (nói về tòa nhà cụ thể)

Lỗi 1: Bỏ "the" khi nói về thứ duy nhất

Lỗi 4: Dùng "a" với danh từ số nhiều hoặc không đếm được
