IELTS Speaking chấm Fluency and Coherence (FC) — 25% tổng điểm. Band 7 FC mô tả: "uses a range of connectives and discourse markers with some flexibility." Người chỉ dùng "and / but / so / because" và đôi khi "however" sẽ kẹt ở Band 6.

Người Việt học IELTS gặp ba vấn đề riêng:

Nhóm 1 — Mở đầu / câu giờ: well, so, right, OK, now

Dùng khi bắt đầu câu trả lời, đặc biệt Part 1/Part 3 khi cần 1–2 giây nghĩ.

DM Khi dùng Ví dụ
Well Bắt đầu trả lời câu hỏi cần suy nghĩ "Well, that's an interesting question. I'd say..."
So Mở câu trả lời mang tính giải thích "So, the thing about my hometown is..."
Right Bắt đầu sau khi nghe câu hỏi "Right, where do I start?"
OK Tương tự Right, hơi informal "OK, so my favourite hobby is..."
Now Mở mạch ý mới (Part 2) "Now, the most memorable thing about that trip was..."

Lưu ý: "Well" ở đầu câu KHÁC nghĩa với "well" tính từ ("I am well").

Nhóm 2 — Câu giờ và suy nghĩ: you know, I mean, let me think, let me see

  • "I really enjoy cooking, you know, especially traditional Vietnamese dishes."
  • "It's a bit difficult to explain — I mean, the food in my hometown is just different."
  • "Let me think — probably about five years ago."
  • "Let me see — yes, I'd say my brother is the most influential person in my life."

Quan trọng: you knowI mean dùng vừa phải. Quá nhiều = thừa thãi. 1–2 lần mỗi câu trả lời dài là hợp lý.

Nhóm 3 — Làm mềm / hedging: kind of, sort of, I guess, I suppose

  • "It's kind of difficult to choose just one favourite."
  • "I sort of prefer staying at home, to be honest."
  • "I guess social media has both positive and negative effects."
  • "I suppose it depends on the person."

Nhóm 4 — Kết nối / chuyển chủ đề: anyway, by the way, speaking of which, that reminds me

  • "Anyway, going back to my main point, what really stood out about that trip was..."
  • "By the way, I should mention that my best friend was with me on that trip."
  • "Speaking of which, that actually relates to another habit I have..."
  • "That reminds me — I also visited the same place a year later."

Nhóm 5 — Nhấn mạnh / tăng cường độ: actually, basically, in fact, the thing is, to be honest

Dùng để nhấn mạnh hoặc đánh dấu thông tin quan trọng.

  • "Actually, I find it more interesting than I expected." (báo hiệu surprise vs expectation)
  • "Basically, it's about helping people learn English." (báo hiệu summary)
  • "In fact, I've been doing it for over five years." (nhấn mạnh)
  • "The thing is, I never really enjoyed maths in school." (báo hiệu key information)
  • "To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of pop music." (báo hiệu candid opinion)

Nhóm 6 — Phản hồi / xác nhận: exactly, absolutely, definitely, sure, I see

  • "Exactly — that's what I meant."
  • "Absolutely — I couldn't agree more."
  • "Definitely — there's no doubt about it."

Ví dụ Speaking dài có nhiều DM (Part 2 — Describe a memorable journey)

"Well, I'd like to talk about a trip I took to Đà Nẵng about three years ago. So, I went there with my family during the summer holidays — it was my first time visiting Central Vietnam. Now, what made it really special was the food. I mean, I'd eaten Vietnamese food my whole life, obviously, but the local dishes there were just on another level. Actually, to be honest, I think the mì Quảng I had at a small street stall was the best thing I've ever eaten. Anyway, the thing is, that trip kind of changed how I think about travel. I guess before that I always thought of holidays as needing to be in fancy resorts, but actually, the most memorable moments came from just walking around and trying random food. You know, sometimes the simplest experiences are the most memorable. So, that's the trip I'd choose to talk about."

Đếm DM: well, so, now, I mean, obviously, actually, to be honest, anyway, the thing is, kind of, I guess, actually, you know, so → 14 DM trong ~150 từ.

  • ❌ "Actually, my hometown is Hanoi." (không có gì để correct)
  • ❌ "Actually, I love coffee." (không có expectation đối lập)
  • ✅ "I love coffee. Actually, I drink three cups a day." (báo hiệu detail vượt quá expected)
  • ✅ "Most people think Hanoi is loud, but actually there are many quiet corners." (correct expectation)

Cách fix: Dùng "well", "so", hoặc bỏ qua DM khi mở topic mới.

Lỗi 2: Lạm dụng "and / but / so" — không có DM khác

Bài nói toàn nối bằng "and / but / so" nghe trẻ em.

  • ❌ "I went to Da Nang and I tried the food and it was good and I also went to the beach and the beach was beautiful and..."
  • ✅ "I went to Da Nang. Well, the first thing I did was try the local food, which was incredible. After that, I went to the beach. To be honest, the beach was even better than the food..."

Cách fix: Trước khi mở miệng nói "and", thử thay bằng "well", "what's more", "after that", "speaking of which".

Lỗi 3: Lạm dụng "like" theo kiểu American teen

  • ❌ "I went, like, to the market and bought, like, some food and it was, like, really cheap."

Trong IELTS Speaking, "like" làm DM bị tính filler — hạ điểm. Dùng có chủ ý: - ✅ "Like I said earlier, I really enjoy cooking." (= as I said) - ✅ "Things like football and badminton." (= such as)

Cách fix: Đếm "like" trong recording riêng. Mục tiêu < 3 lần/2 phút.

Lỗi 4: Dùng DM viết trong nói

Bê "Furthermore", "Moreover", "Consequently", "Nevertheless" vào Speaking nghe rất sách vở.

  • ❌ "I love coffee. Furthermore, I drink it every morning."
  • ✅ "I love coffee. In fact, I drink it every morning." / "I love coffee, and what's more, I drink it every morning."

Cách fix: Khi practice Speaking, ghi chú sẵn 5–7 DM nói tự nhiên (well, so, actually, the thing is, you know, I mean, to be honest) và force yourself dùng chúng. DM viết để dành cho Writing.

Ứng dụng IELTS theo Part

Part 1 — câu trả lời ngắn

Dùng 1 opener + 1 hedger là đủ:

Q: Do you enjoy reading?

"Well, to be honest, not as much as I should. I kind of read a few articles online, but I haven't picked up a proper book in months."

Part 2 — long turn

Dùng 4–6 DM phân bổ qua 2 phút. Mở đầu (well/so), thân bài (you know, I mean, anyway, the thing is), kết bài (so, that's why).

Part 3 — discussion

Dùng softening DM nhiều hơn (kind of, I suppose, I guess, sort of) và evidence-marking DM (actually, in fact, the thing is) khi cần justify opinion.

Q: Do you think social media is making people less social?

"Well, it's hard to say — it kind of depends on how you define 'social'. I suppose on one hand, people spend less face-to-face time. But on the other hand, I'd say social media lets people stay connected across distances. Actually, in my view, the issue isn't social media itself, but how we use it."

Bài tập tự luyện

  1. Recording exercise: Ghi âm 1-phút trả lời câu "Tell me about your hometown" mà KHÔNG dùng "and / but / so" làm DM. Phải dùng ít nhất 5 DM khác.
  2. Substitution exercise: Lấy 1 đoạn Speaking đã viết. Thay mỗi "and" bằng một DM khác.
  3. Listening transfer: Nghe 1 đoạn IELTS Speaking sample (Band 8+).

  • 6 nhóm DM nói: opener (well, so) — thinking (you know, I mean) — softener (kind of, I guess) — transition (anyway, by the way) — emphasis (actually, the thing is) — response (exactly, absolutely)
  • Mục tiêu: 4–6 DM mỗi câu trả lời Part 2 dài
  • Tránh: actually-as-opener, like-as-filler, written DM trong nói (Furthermore, Moreover)
  • Band 7+ yêu cầu range (đa dạng) và flexibility (chọn DM phù hợp ngữ cảnh)
