Tại sao quan trọng

Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, hai từ này xuất hiện rất thường xuyên khi viết về nguyên nhân và kết quả. Nhầm "effect" với "affect" (hoặc ngược lại) là lỗi Lexical Resource rõ ràng. Đây cũng là lỗi phổ biến ngay cả ở người học trình độ trung-cao vì hai từ nghe na ná nhau.

AFFECT — Động từ

Subject + affect + Object
affect + noun phrase

"Affect" diễn đạt hành động tác động, ảnh hưởng:

  • Pollution affects air quality significantly.
  • The economic downturn affected millions of workers.
  • Stress can affect both physical and mental health.
  • Poor nutrition affects children's ability to concentrate.
  • These policies affect the most vulnerable members of society.

Các dạng chia: - Present: affects / affect - Past: affected - Perfect: has/have affected - Continuous: is/are affecting - Passive: is/are affected (by)

Thể bị động: - Millions of people are affected by poverty. - The environment has been adversely affected by industrial waste. - Rural communities were disproportionately affected by the closure.

EFFECT — Danh từ

"Effect" là danh từ chỉ kết quả, hệ quả, tác động:

  • The effects of urbanisation are complex and wide-ranging.
  • Lack of sleep has a significant effect on cognitive performance.
  • The long-term effects of this policy remain unclear.
  • The effect of the new law was immediate and far-reaching.
  • Researchers studied the effects of social media on teenagers.

PHẦN 2: HAI DẠNG ÍT GẶP HƠN

"Effect" dùng như động từ (rất hiếm, formal)

Trong văn phong rất trang trọng, "effect" đôi khi được dùng như động từ nghĩa là "gây ra, tạo ra" (chú ý: không phải "affect"):

effect + change / reform / solution
(= bring about, cause, achieve)
  • The new leadership effected significant changes in company culture.
  • It is difficult to effect real reform without political will.

Lưu ý: Cách dùng này rất hiếm và chuyên môn. Trong IELTS, tránh dùng để không bị hiểu nhầm.

"Affect" dùng như danh từ (thuật ngữ tâm lý học)

"Affect" đôi khi là danh từ trong tâm lý học, chỉ cảm xúc hoặc trạng thái cảm xúc:

  • The patient displayed flat affect throughout the interview.
  • Positive affect is associated with better health outcomes.

Lưu ý: Đây là thuật ngữ chuyên ngành tâm lý học. Trong IELTS, không dùng "affect" như danh từ thông thường.

PHẦN 3: CÁCH PHÂN BIỆT NHANH TRONG CÂU

Kiểm tra từ loại:

Bước 1: Nhìn vào vị trí trong câu và từ đứng trước. - Có mạo từ (a/an/the) đứng trước → effect (danh từ) - Có tính từ sở hữu (its/their/the) đứng trước → effect (danh từ) - Có chủ ngữ đứng trước + muốn diễn đạt hành động → affect (động từ)

Bước 2: Thử thay thế. - Nếu thay được bằng "influence" (v) → dùng affect - Nếu thay được bằng "result" hoặc "impact" (n) → dùng effect

Ví dụ áp dụng:

"Climate change will ___ the entire planet." → thay "influence" vào được → dùng affect ✅

"The ___ of climate change will be severe." → có "The" đứng trước → danh từ → dùng effect ✅

"This policy will have a negative ___ on the economy." → "a negative ___" → danh từ → effect ✅
