+ Reason Tại sao? because, since, as
+ Example Ví dụ cụ thể? for example, like, such as
+ Contrast Nhưng mặt khác? but, although, however
+ Detail Cụ thể hơn? actually, in fact, especially
+ Personal Cá nhân tôi thấy sao? personally, for me, in my case

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong IELTS Speaking, bốn tiêu chí chấm điểm gồm: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range, Pronunciation. Fluency & Coherence yêu cầu bạn nói liên tục, có cấu trúc, và phát triển ý. Câu trả lời kiểu:

  • "I like coffee." ❌ (quá ngắn, không có gì để chấm)
  • "I like coffee because it helps me focus, especially in the morning when I have a lot of work to do." ✅

PATTERN 1: Answer + Reason (Lý do)

Connectors: because, since, as, given that

[Answer] + because/since/as + [reason]

Q: Do you prefer studying in the morning or at night?

❌ Short: "Morning."

✅ Extended: "I prefer studying in the morning because my mind is much sharper then and I find it easier to concentrate. Since I sleep by 11pm, I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on difficult tasks."

Q: Is exercise important?

❌ "Yes, it is."

✅ "Yes, absolutely, because regular exercise not only improves physical health but also significantly reduces stress levels. As most people lead increasingly sedentary lives, especially office workers, staying active has become more important than ever."

Mẹo: Aim for at least two reasons — the second one shows you can sustain the topic.

Connectors: for example, for instance, like, such as, a good example is, take...for instance

[Answer] + for example/like + [specific example]

Q: Do you think cities are better than the countryside for young people?

❌ "Yes, cities have more opportunities."

✅ "Yes, I think cities generally offer more opportunities for young people. For example, in my city, Ho Chi Minh City, there are hundreds of companies across technology, finance, and creative industries that simply don't exist in rural areas. Take the startup scene, for instance — it's almost entirely concentrated in major urban centres."

Q: What hobbies do you have?

❌ "I like reading."

✅ "I enjoy reading quite a lot, particularly non-fiction books about history and psychology. For instance, I recently finished a book about how habits form in the brain, which was fascinating and actually helped me understand my own behaviour better."

Connectors: but, although, however, that said, on the other hand, even so

[Answer] + but/although + [contrasting point]

Q: Do you enjoy watching TV?

❌ "Not really."

✅ "Not particularly, although I do watch documentaries occasionally — especially ones about nature or science. That said, I think excessive TV watching can be quite passive, and I generally prefer activities that engage me more actively, like reading or cooking."

Q: Do you think technology has improved our lives?

❌ "Yes."

✅ "Yes, in many ways technology has transformed daily life for the better — communication, healthcare, and education have all benefited enormously. However, I think there are also real downsides. For example, the rise of smartphones has made many people less present in face-to-face interactions, which I find quite concerning."

Mẹo: Câu trả lời có contrast nghe thông minh và mature — examiner rất thích.

PATTERN 4: Answer + Detail (Chi tiết cụ thể)

Thêm thông tin cụ thể hơn — số liệu, địa điểm, thời gian, cách thức.

Connectors: actually, in fact, especially, particularly, specifically, in particular, what I mean is

[Answer] + actually/in fact + [specific detail]

Q: How often do you exercise?

❌ "Three times a week."

✅ "I try to exercise about three times a week — specifically, I go for a run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and I do yoga on Sundays. Actually, I started this routine about two years ago when I realised I was spending far too much time sitting at a desk."

Q: What's your hometown like?

❌ "It's a small town."

✅ "It's a fairly small town in the Mekong Delta — specifically, it's known for its fruit orchards and river markets. What makes it special, actually, is that life moves at a much slower pace than here in the city, which I really miss sometimes."

Connectors: personally, for me, in my case, from my own experience, I find that, I remember...

[Answer] + personally/for me + [personal perspective or experience]

Q: Do you think people read enough books nowadays?

❌ "No, I don't think so."

✅ "No, I don't think most people read as much as they used to. Personally, I try to read at least one book a month, but I notice that many of my friends rarely pick up a book at all. From my own experience, reading has made me a much better communicator and helped me develop empathy — so I think it's a real shame that it's declining."

Q: What kind of music do you like?

❌ "I like pop music."

✅ "I mainly listen to pop and R&B, although I've recently gotten into jazz — which surprised me, because I never expected to enjoy it. For me, music is less about genre and more about the mood it creates. I find that jazz is perfect for when I'm trying to focus or wind down after a long day."

Q: Do you think the government should do more to encourage healthy eating?

✅ "Yes, I definitely think governments have an important role to play here. [Reason] Because eating habits are shaped heavily by what's affordable and accessible, and in many countries, unhealthy processed food is simply cheaper than fresh produce. [Example] For instance, in many low-income neighbourhoods, there are far more fast food outlets than supermarkets selling fresh vegetables — which is sometimes called a 'food desert'. [Contrast] That said, I don't think government intervention alone is enough — [Personal] and from my own experience, the most lasting changes tend to come from education and awareness rather than regulation alone."

Câu trả lời ngắn vs. câu trả lời đủ dài

Part Câu hỏi Độ dài phù hợp
Part 1 "Do you like cooking?" 2-4 câu (20-40 giây)
Part 2 "Describe a person you admire" 1.5-2 phút (monologue)
Part 3 "Why do you think people enjoy cooking?" 4-6 câu (40-60 giây)

  • ❌ "I like music. Music is good. Music makes me happy. I really like music."

  • Part 1 là warm-up — examiner không muốn nghe essay 2 phút cho câu hỏi "Do you like coffee?". 2-4 câu là đủ.

Lỗi 3: Không dùng connectors — câu văn rời rạc

  • ❌ "I like reading. I read every day. It is interesting." (ba câu không kết nối)
  • ✅ "I enjoy reading every day, particularly fiction, because it helps me unwind and I find myself becoming more empathetic the more I read."

  • ❌ "I prefer cities because there are more jobs." (dừng lại — quá ngắn cho Part 3)
  • ✅ "I prefer cities because there are more jobs — for example, the tech industry in Vietnam is almost entirely concentrated in Hanoi and HCMC, so if you want to work in that field, city life is almost a necessity. Plus, there's more diversity in terms of culture, food, and social experiences."

Bài tập luyện

Practice: Mở rộng câu trả lời

Với mỗi câu trả lời ngắn dưới đây, hãy viết phiên bản dài hơn (4-6 câu) bằng cách thêm ít nhất 2 patterns.

  1. Q: Do you enjoy cooking? A: "Yes, I do."

  2. Q: Do you think it's important to learn a second language? A: "Yes, it's important."

  3. Q: Do people in your country spend enough time outdoors? A: "Not really."

Ví dụ câu trả lời mẫu

1. Do you enjoy cooking? "Yes, I actually enjoy cooking quite a lot — particularly when I have the time to try new recipes. For example, last weekend I made a Vietnamese pho from scratch, which took about three hours but was incredibly satisfying. I find that cooking is a great way to relax after a stressful day, almost like meditation. That said, during the working week I rarely have time, so I tend to keep things simple — maybe just stir-fry vegetables or make a quick soup."

2. Do you think it's important to learn a second language? "Absolutely, because being able to communicate in another language opens up enormous opportunities — professionally and personally. For instance, knowing English has allowed me to access educational resources, connect with people from around the world, and pursue career paths that simply wouldn't be possible otherwise. That said, I think the most important reason is cultural — learning a language helps you understand how other people see the world, which I find incredibly enriching. Personally, studying English changed the way I think about communication."
