Tại sao quan trọng

IELTS Speaking Part 2 thường có dạng: - "Describe a place you have visited." - "Talk about a person who has influenced you." - "Describe an interesting experience you have had." - "Describe a time when you had to work hard."

Câu trả lời Band 6 thường chỉ dùng Past Simple một cách đơn điệu. Câu trả lời Band 7+ kết hợp nhiều thì khác nhau, dùng ngôn ngữ mô tả phong phú, và kể chuyện có cấu trúc rõ ràng.

PHẦN 1: PAST SIMPLE — Xương sống của câu chuyện

Past Simple mô tả các sự kiện chính trong câu chuyện — những gì đã xảy ra và đã kết thúc.

Subject + V2 (regular: -ed, irregular: sang/went/saw...)

Dùng Past Simple để: - Kể các sự kiện theo trình tự: "I arrived, checked in, and went to my room." - Mô tả hành động hoàn chỉnh: "She told me something I'll never forget." - Nói về cảm xúc tại thời điểm đó: "I was so nervous. I felt completely overwhelmed."

Ví dụ kể chuyện: - "Last summer, I went on a trip to Da Lat with my family. We drove up the mountain road early in the morning, arrived around noon, and spent the whole afternoon exploring the flower gardens." - "I met her at a conference two years ago. She introduced herself and we started talking about our research interests. I realised immediately that she was someone exceptional."

PHẦN 2: PAST CONTINUOUS — Bối cảnh và hành động đang xảy ra

Past Continuous mô tả hoạt động đang tiến hành tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ — thường là bối cảnh khi một sự kiện khác xảy ra.

Subject + was/were + V-ing

Hai cách dùng phổ biến nhất khi kể chuyện:

1. Bối cảnh (setting the scene)

• "It was raining heavily when we arrived."
• "Everyone was laughing and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement."
• "The sun was setting and the sky was turning a deep orange."
• "I was sitting at my desk, trying to focus, when suddenly..."

2. Hành động bị gián đoạn (interrupted action)

was/were + V-ing + when + Past Simple

• "I was walking home when I suddenly met an old friend."
• "We were just about to leave when the guide called us back."
• "She was explaining the project when the power went out."

Mẫu câu tả bối cảnh opening: - "It was a warm evening in July. The streets were filled with people, music was playing in the background, and I was standing there wondering what to expect..."

PHẦN 3: PAST PERFECT — Sự kiện xảy ra trước

Past Perfect mô tả sự kiện xảy ra trước một sự kiện quá khứ khác — để chỉ rõ trình tự thời gian.

Subject + had + past participle

Dùng khi: - Cần làm rõ điều gì đó xảy ra trước: "By the time we arrived, the show had already started." - Kể về trải nghiệm lần đầu: "I had never seen anything like it before." - Giải thích nguyên nhân dẫn đến sự kiện quá khứ: "I accepted the job because I had always dreamed of working in that field."

Ví dụ: - "I had never visited a foreign country before that trip, so everything felt incredibly new and exciting." - "By the time I graduated, I had spent four years studying something I truly loved." - "I had been thinking about changing careers for a long time before I finally made the decision." - "When I walked into the room, I realised I had met her somewhere before."

PHẦN 4: PRESENT PERFECT — Kết nối quá khứ với hiện tại

Present Perfect dùng khi bạn muốn kết nối trải nghiệm quá khứ với ý nghĩa hoặc cảm xúc ở hiện tại.

Subject + has/have + past participle

Dùng khi: - Nói về ảnh hưởng kéo dài: "That experience has shaped who I am today." - Kết luận câu chuyện: "It has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life." - Nói về điều chưa từng xảy ra: "I have never felt so proud of myself."

Ví dụ kết chuyện: - "That trip has stayed with me ever since — it completely changed the way I see the world." - "Working with her has been one of the most valuable experiences of my career." - "I have never regretted making that decision." - "It has made me much more confident and willing to take risks."

PHẦN 5: SẮP XẾP SỰ KIỆN — Sequencing Language

Để kể chuyện mạch lạc, dùng các sequence markers để dẫn dắt người nghe qua các giai đoạn:

Mở đầu câu chuyện

• "It was back in [year/time]..."
• "This happened about [time] ago..."
• "I'll never forget the time when..."
• "It all started when..."
• "One of the most memorable experiences I've had was..."

Tiến trình sự kiện

• Đầu tiên: "First, ... / To begin with, ... / Initially, ..."
• Tiếp theo: "Then, ... / After that, ... / Next, ... / Soon after, ..."
• Cùng lúc: "Meanwhile, ... / At the same time, ... / While ... was happening, ..."

"I'd like to talk about the time I passed my university entrance exam — it was one of the proudest moments of my life.

It was about five years ago. I had been studying incredibly hard for months, often staying up until midnight. My parents had sacrificed a lot to support me, and I felt the weight of that pressure every day. I remember one evening in particular — I was reviewing past papers when I suddenly realised I'd been preparing all wrong for one of the sections. I panicked, called a friend, and we spent the whole night reworking my strategy.

On the day of the exam, I was so nervous I could barely eat. But once I started writing, everything clicked. I had never felt so focused. When the results came out three weeks later, I saw my name on the list and I just froze for a moment.

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Kể chuyện chỉ dùng Present tense

• ❌ "I go to the beach and I see many fish."
• ✅ "I went to the beach and saw many fascinating fish."

Lỗi 2: Dùng Past Perfect không cần thiết (mọi câu đều "had")

• ❌ "I had gone to the store and I had bought some food and I had met a friend."
• ✅ Past Perfect chỉ cần khi cần làm rõ trước/sau. Với chuỗi sự kiện bình thường → Past Simple.

Lỗi 3: Sai form Past Simple của irregular verbs

• ❌ "I taked a deep breath." / "She singed beautifully."
• ✅ "I took a deep breath." / "She sang beautifully."

Lỗi 4: Không có bối cảnh (no scene-setting)

• ❌ Kể ngay vào sự kiện mà không tả bối cảnh → nghe như liệt kê sự kiện
• ✅ Bắt đầu bằng "It was a [adj] day/evening/morning..." để tạo bối cảnh

Lỗi 5: Không có phản tư (no reflection)

• ❌ Kể xong sự kiện rồi dừng lại
• ✅ Luôn thêm "Looking back, ... / That experience taught me ... / It has made me ..." để kết nối với hiện tại

Chọn thì đúng

Người học Việt Nam thường mắc hai lỗi lớn: 1. Dùng động từ nguyên thể thay vì V2/V-ed: "Yesterday I go to school." 2. Dùng sai dạng bất quy tắc: "She buyed a new phone."

Định nghĩa

Past Simple dùng để diễn tả: - Hành động đã xảy ra và kết thúc ở thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ - Các hành động nối tiếp nhau trong quá khứ (kể chuyện) - Thói quen hoặc trạng thái trong quá khứ (đã không còn nữa) - Hành động diễn ra trong một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ

Cấu trúc

Câu khẳng định

Subject + V2 (past form)

• I studied English last night.
• She went to the market yesterday.
• They lived in Hanoi for five years.

Câu phủ định

Subject + did not (didn't) + V (nguyên thể)

• I didn't study yesterday — I was too tired.
• She didn't go to the party.
• They didn't know about the change.

Lưu ý: Khi đã có "didn't", động từ trở về nguyên thể. - ❌ SAI: She didn't went home. - ✅ ĐÚNG: She didn't go home.

Câu hỏi

Did + Subject + V (nguyên thể) ...?

• Did you study last night?
• Did she call you?
• What did they do at the weekend?

Wh-questions: - Where did you go last summer? - When did she start her new job? - How long did they live in Da Nang?

Động từ "be" trong Past Simple

"Be" không dùng "did" — có dạng riêng: was / were

Cách dùng phổ biến

1. Hành động hoàn thành tại thời điểm xác định

Phải có (hoặc ngầm hiểu) thời gian cụ thể: yesterday, last week, in 2020, three years ago...

• I visited Da Nang last summer.
• She graduated from university two years ago.
• They met for the first time in 2015.
• Einstein developed the theory of relativity in the early 20th century.

2. Chuỗi hành động nối tiếp (kể chuyện)

Rất quan trọng cho IELTS Speaking Part 2 — kể về một sự kiện theo thứ tự.

• I woke up early, had a quick breakfast, took the bus, and arrived at the exam centre just in time.
• She saw the advertisement, applied immediately, and got the job within a week.

3. Thói quen / trạng thái trong quá khứ (đã không còn)

Khi muốn nói về điều gì đó đúng trong quá khứ nhưng không còn đúng nữa.

• When I was a child, I loved playing outside. (giờ không còn nữa)
• We used to live in the countryside, but we moved to Hanoi in 2010.
• She worked as a nurse for ten years before she retired.

4. Trong câu điều kiện loại 2

• If I had more time, I would study harder.
• If she knew the answer, she would tell you.

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Dùng động từ nguyên thể thay V2

• ❌ SAI: Yesterday I go to school by bus.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: Yesterday I went to school by bus.
• TẠI SAO: Tiếng Việt không thay đổi động từ ("hôm qua tôi đi học"), nhưng tiếng Anh bắt buộc chia past form.

Lỗi 2: Thêm -ed vào động từ bất quy tắc

• ❌ SAI: She buyed a new dress. / He goed home early.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She bought a new dress. / He went home early.
• TẠI SAO: Irregular verbs có dạng quá khứ riêng — KHÔNG thêm -ed.

Lỗi 3: Dùng V2 sau "didn't"

• ❌ SAI: I didn't went to the party.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: I didn't go to the party.
• TẠI SAO: "didn't" đã mang nghĩa quá khứ phủ định — động từ sau nó trở về nguyên thể.

Lỗi 4: Dùng "did" với "was/were"

• ❌ SAI: Did she was happy? / I didn't was there.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: Was she happy? / I wasn't there.
• TẠI SAO: "Be" trong quá khứ (was/were) dùng riêng — không kết hợp với did.

Lỗi 5: Nhầm Past Simple và Present Perfect

• ❌ SAI: I have visited Hanoi last year.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: I visited Hanoi last year.
• TẠI SAO: Khi có thời gian xác định trong quá khứ (last year, yesterday, in 2020...) → bắt buộc dùng Past Simple, không dùng Present Perfect.

Lỗi 6: Phát âm -ed sai

• ❌ Phát âm "worked" như "work-ED" (2 âm tiết)
• ✅ Đúng: "worked" = /wɜːkt/ (1 âm tiết, âm /t/ cuối)
• Ngoại lệ đọc 2 âm tiết: wanted /ˈwɒntɪd/, needed /ˈniːdɪd/

Đây là sự phân biệt khó nhất cho người học Việt Nam vì tiếng Việt không có sự khác biệt này.

Nguyên tắc vàng: Thấy thời gian cụ thể trong quá khứ → Past Simple. Không thấy thời gian hoặc chỉ biết "đã có lúc nào đó" → Present Perfect.

Lưu ý cho người học Việt Nam

Tiếng Việt dùng phó từ thời gian ("hôm qua", "năm ngoái", "lúc trước") để diễn tả quá khứ — động từ không thay đổi: - "Hôm qua tôi đi học" = "Yesterday I went to school" - "Tôi mua điện thoại năm ngoái" = "I bought a phone last year"

Ba điều cần nhớ mỗi lần nói về quá khứ: 1. Có thời gian xác định không? → Past Simple 2. Động từ đó có regular hay irregular? → Chia đúng dạng 3. Câu phủ định/hỏi: didn't/did + V nguyên thể (trừ be → wasn't/weren't/was/were)

Mẹo học irregular verbs: Đừng cố nhớ từng cặp riêng lẻ. Hãy đặt câu với mỗi từ và nói thành tiếng: - "Yesterday I went to school, ate lunch with my friend, and came home at 5 PM."

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

IELTS Speaking

• Part 1: "When I was a student, I studied at a public school..."
• Part 2 (kể chuyện — dùng nhiều nhất): "The most memorable trip I took was to Phong Nha cave. I went there with my family when I was sixteen. We explored the cave for hours, took amazing photos, and had a picnic by the river. The whole experience was unforgettable."
• Part 3: "In the past, most Vietnamese families lived in the countryside. However, this pattern changed significantly from the 1990s onwards."

IELTS Writing

• Task 1 (historical data): "The graph shows that sales rose sharply in 2018 before they fell back in 2019." / "The unemployment rate peaked at 12% in 2009."
• Task 2: "Historically, education was reserved for the elite, but access expanded dramatically during the 20th century."

Tóm tắt nhanh

1. Past Simple diễn tả hành động đã hoàn thành tại thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
2. Câu khẳng định: V2 (regular: +ed / irregular: học thuộc)

Lỗi phổ biến của người Việt — Verb không thay đổi hình theo thời

Tiếng Việt: "Hôm qua tôi đi Hà Nội" — "đi" giữ nguyên; "hôm qua" mang nghĩa thời gian. Người học VN bê pattern này sang English → time adverb đúng nhưng verb sai form.

❌ "Yesterday I go to Hanoi." → ✅ "Yesterday I went to Hanoi." ❌ "Last week she finish the project." → ✅ "Last week she finished the project." ❌ "When I was young, I like football." → ✅ "When I was young, I liked football."

Quy tắc: Trong English, verb PHẢI mang dấu hiệu thì. Time adverb chỉ là dấu hiệu phụ; verb form là dấu hiệu chính. Khi có cả hai trong câu nhưng verb không đổi → ungrammatical (Band 5–6 marker).

Drill cho Speaking: Mỗi tối kể 1-phút "Today I..." dùng past simple. Force -ed trên mọi regular verb. Force irregular form on every irregular verb. Ghi âm + nghe lại + đếm verb chưa biến hình.
