Pronoun reference là gì?

Pronoun (đại từ) như it, they, he, she, this, that, these, those được dùng để thay thế cho danh từ đã đề cập trước đó — nhằm tránh lặp lại.

Đại từ chỉ hoạt động tốt khi người đọc/nghe biết ngay lập tức nó đang thay thế cho danh từ nào. Nếu có thể hiểu nhiều hơn một cách → lỗi tham chiếu mơ hồ (ambiguous reference).

"The teacher praised the student because he worked so hard."

Câu trên mơ hồ vì "he" có thể là teacher hoặc student.

KIỂU 1: "IT" MƠ HỒ

"It" là đại từ thay thế cho một danh từ số ít, không người. Lỗi xảy ra khi câu trước có nhiều danh từ và không rõ "it" chỉ cái nào.

Ví dụ và cách sửa:

Ví dụ 1: - ❌ "The company introduced a new policy. It caused a lot of confusion." - ✅ "The company introduced a new policy. The policy caused a lot of confusion." - ✅ "The company introduced a new policy that caused a lot of confusion."

Ví dụ 2: - ❌ "The report discussed the budget and the timeline. It was unclear." - → Không rõ "it" = report, budget hay timeline - ✅ "The report discussed the budget and the timeline. The timeline was unclear." - ✅ "The report discussed the budget and the timeline, but neither was clearly explained."

Ví dụ 3: - ❌ "Technology has improved education. But it has also created problems." - → Câu này thực ra ổn vì "it" = technology là rõ nhất - ✅ Nếu muốn rõ hơn: "Technology has improved education, but technology has also created problems." (hoặc giữ "it" — tuỳ ngữ cảnh)

Quy tắc: "It" nên chỉ đến danh từ gần nhất hoặc chủ đề rõ ràng nhất trong câu trước. Nếu có thể hiểu nhiều hơn một cách → viết lại với danh từ cụ thể.

KIỂU 2: "THEY" MƠ HỒ

"They" thay thế cho danh từ số nhiều. Lỗi xảy ra khi câu trước có nhiều nhóm danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ và cách sửa:

Ví dụ 1: - ❌ "Parents and teachers both care about children. They are often too strict." - → "They" = parents, teachers, hay cả hai? - ✅ "Parents and teachers both care about children. However, parents are often too strict about screen time." - ✅ "Parents and teachers both care about children, but teachers tend to be stricter in academic matters."

Ví dụ 2: - ❌ "The government and businesses need to cooperate. They should invest more." - → Ai đầu tư? Cả hai? Chỉ một bên? - ✅ "The government and businesses need to cooperate. Both parties should invest more in infrastructure."

Ví dụ 3: - ❌ "Students who study abroad often struggle at first. They eventually adapt." - → Câu này ổn — "they" rõ ràng là "students who study abroad" - Không phải mọi "they" đều mơ hồ — chỉ khi có nhiều nhóm danh từ số nhiều.

KIỂU 3: "THIS" / "THAT" MƠ HỒ

"This" và "that" thường dùng để chỉ đến một ý/tình huống vừa được đề cập. Lỗi xảy ra khi đoạn văn trước đó có nhiều ý và không rõ "this" đang gộp lại cái gì.

Ví dụ và cách sửa:

Ví dụ 1: - ❌ "Pollution is rising. Traffic is increasing. Deforestation is getting worse. This is a serious concern." - → "This" = pollution? traffic? deforestation? cả ba? - ✅ "Pollution is rising. Traffic is increasing. Deforestation is getting worse. These environmental problems are a serious concern." - ✅ "All of these issues represent a serious threat to the environment."

Ví dụ 2: - ❌ "Many young people prefer working from home. This makes employers uncomfortable." - → Câu này ổn — "this" rõ ràng chỉ "the fact that young people prefer working from home" - ✅ Có thể viết rõ hơn: "This preference for remote work makes some employers uncomfortable."

Mẹo hay: Thay "this" bằng "this + noun" — "this trend", "this problem", "this approach", "this finding" — để luôn rõ ràng và nâng band.

KIỂU 4: "HE / SHE" SAI ĐỐI TƯỢNG

Khi câu có hai người cùng giới tính, "he" hoặc "she" có thể gây nhầm lẫn.

Ví dụ và cách sửa:

Ví dụ 1: - ❌ "The teacher told the student that he was wrong." - → "He" = teacher hay student? - ✅ "The teacher told the student that the student was wrong." - ✅ "The teacher said to the student, 'You were wrong.'"

Ví dụ 2: - ❌ "After the manager spoke to the employee, he felt better." - → Ai cảm thấy tốt hơn — manager hay employee? - ✅ "After the manager spoke to the employee, the employee felt better." - ✅ "After their meeting, the employee felt more confident."

Ví dụ 3: - ❌ "Maria called Anna because she was worried." - → Ai lo lắng — Maria hay Anna? - ✅ "Maria called Anna because Maria was worried about the situation." - ✅ "Maria called Anna, worried about her friend's wellbeing."

Chiến lược viết rõ pronoun reference

1. Dùng "this/that + noun" thay vì chỉ "this/that"

2. Lặp danh từ khi cần thiết

Không phải lúc nào lặp danh từ cũng xấu — đôi khi cần để tránh nhầm lẫn:

• ✅ "The government introduced a policy. The policy was controversial." (rõ hơn "It was controversial")

3. Dùng relative clause để gắn pronoun vào danh từ

• Thay: "She gave the report to her manager. It was late."
• Bằng: "She gave the report — which was already late — to her manager."

Tại sao người Việt mắc lỗi này?

Trong tiếng Việt, cách nói nhấn mạnh chủ đề thường dùng cấu trúc:

"Ba tôi, ông ấy làm việc rất chăm chỉ." "Vấn đề này, nó cần phải được giải quyết."

Người học dịch thẳng cấu trúc "danh từ + đại từ + động từ" sang tiếng Anh, tạo ra lỗi double subject:

❌ "My father, he works very hard." ← sai trong tiếng Anh chuẩn

Tiếng Anh chỉ dùng một trong hai: hoặc danh từ, hoặc đại từ — không bao giờ cả hai trong cùng một mệnh đề.

KHI NÀO CÓ THỂ DÙNG DẤU PHẨY + ĐẠI TỪ (APPOSITIVE)?

Tiếng Anh có cấu trúc appositive — thêm thông tin bổ sung — nhưng khác với double subject:

Appositive (đúng):

"My father, a retired engineer, works very hard." ← danh từ bổ nghĩa, không phải đại từ

Double subject (sai):

❌ "My father, he works very hard."

Cách phân biệt: Appositive là noun/noun phrase. Double subject là đại từ (he/she/it/they/we).

Speaking:

Lỗi double subject nghe rất lạ với người bản ngữ và bị đánh giá thấp trong tiêu chí Grammatical Range & Accuracy.

• ❌ "My hometown, it is a small city near the coast."
• ✅ "My hometown is a small city near the coast."
• ✅ "It's a small city near the coast." (nếu đã nhắc hometown trước đó)

Writing:

Trong IELTS Writing, lỗi này thường xuất hiện khi người viết dùng cấu trúc câu phức tạp hơn và mất kiểm soát:

• ❌ "The rapid increase in urbanisation, it has led to serious environmental problems."
• ✅ "The rapid increase in urbanisation has led to serious environmental problems."
• ✅ "Rapid urbanisation has led to serious environmental problems."

Cách sửa nhanh

Khi gặp lỗi double subject, có 3 cách sửa:

Cách 1: Giữ danh từ, bỏ đại từ

❌ "My sister she studies medicine." ✅ "My sister studies medicine."

Cách 2: Giữ đại từ, bỏ danh từ (nếu ngữ cảnh đã rõ)

✅ "She studies medicine."

Cách 3: Đổi cấu trúc câu

✅ "As for my sister, she is studying medicine." (dùng "as for" để giới thiệu topic, rồi dùng pronoun) ✅ "My sister, who studies medicine, ..." (dùng relative clause)

Lỗi double subject hay xảy ra nhất khi người học cố thêm thông tin bổ sung vào subject:
