Nhiều tính từ có cặp -ed / -ing từ cùng một động từ:

• I am bored. (tôi cảm thấy chán) — The lesson is boring. (bài học gây chán)

Quy tắc: -ed cho người, -ing cho nguồn gây ra

Các cặp hay gặp: excited/exciting, confused/confusing, amazed/amazing, frightened/frightening, satisfied/satisfying.

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Nói "I am boring" khi ý là "I am bored"

• ❌ I am boring in this class. (= tôi là người gây chán!)
• ✅ I am bored in this class.

Lỗi 2: Mô tả vật bằng -ed

• ❌ The movie was very bored. → ✅ The movie was very boring.

Lỗi 3: Nhầm với người gây cảm giác

• He is an interesting person. (anh ấy thú vị — gây hứng thú cho người khác)

Bẫy "hardly" và "lately" và "nearly": - hard (adj) = khó; hard (adv) = chăm chỉ → "She works hard." - hardly (adv) = hầu như không → "I hardly know him." (nghĩa khác hoàn toàn!) - late (adj/adv) = muộn → "He arrived late." - lately (adv) = gần đây → "Lately, I've been feeling tired." (nghĩa khác!) - near (adj/adv) = gần (khoảng cách) - nearly (adv) = gần như (= almost) → "I nearly fell asleep."

Cách dùng phổ biến

1. Adjective sau Linking Verbs

Linking verbs (be, seem, look, feel, sound, smell, taste, appear, become, get, remain, stay...) không diễn tả hành động — chúng nối chủ ngữ với từ mô tả chủ ngữ. Sau linking verb dùng adjective, không phải adverb.

Subject + linking verb + adjective (không phải adverb)

Phân biệt "look" là linking verb và "look" là action verb: - "She looks beautiful." → "looks" = linking verb → adjective (mô tả "she") - "She looked at me suspiciously." → "looked at" = action verb → adverb (mô tả cách nhìn)

2. Adverb sau Action Verbs

Khi động từ diễn tả hành động thực sự (walk, run, speak, write, work, drive...), dùng adverb để mô tả cách thực hiện hành động đó.

Khi bổ nghĩa cho tính từ, phải dùng adverb (thường là degree adverb):

• ❌ SAI: She speaks English perfect.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She speaks English perfectly.
• ❌ SAI: He drives very careless.

• ❌ SAI: Please answer honest.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: Please answer honestly.
• TẠI SAO: Tiếng Việt không thêm -ly nên người học hay quên. Khi mô tả cách thực hiện hành động → phải dùng adverb.

Lỗi 2: Dùng "good" thay "well" sau action verb

• ❌ SAI: She sings very good.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She sings very well.
• ❌ SAI: He performed good in the exam.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: He performed well in the exam.
• TẠI SAO: "good" là tính từ — không bao giờ mô tả động từ. "well" là adverb bất quy tắc của "good".
• Ngoại lệ: "I feel good." → đúng vì "feel" là linking verb ở đây, mô tả trạng thái → adjective.

• ❌ SAI: She looks beautifully today.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She looks beautiful today.
• ❌ SAI: The food smells wonderfully.

• ❌ SAI: He seems nervously about the exam.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: He seems nervous about the exam.
• TẠI SAO: Linking verbs nối chủ ngữ với tính chất của chủ ngữ — dùng adjective.

Lỗi 4: Nhầm "hard" và "hardly"

• ❌ Viết sai nghĩa: "I hardly worked." (= tôi hầu như không làm việc)
• ✅ Đúng nghĩa: "I worked hard." (= tôi làm việc chăm chỉ)
• TẠI SAO: "hardly" = almost not (phủ định gần như hoàn toàn) — không phải adverb của "hard" theo nghĩa "chăm chỉ".

Lỗi 5: Nhầm "late" và "lately"

• "He arrived late." (= đến muộn)
• "Lately, I've been feeling tired." (= gần đây, recently)
• TẠI SAO: "lately" không có nghĩa là "một cách muộn màng" — nó nghĩa là "recently/gần đây".

Lỗi 6: Dùng adjective thay adverb trước adjective khác

• ❌ SAI: She is incredible intelligent.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: She is incredibly intelligent.
• ❌ SAI: It's surprising difficult.
• ✅ ĐÚNG: It's surprisingly difficult.
• TẠI SAO: Khi bổ nghĩa cho tính từ, phải dùng adverb (không phải tính từ).

Lưu ý cho người học Việt Nam

Tiếng Việt dùng cùng một từ cho cả tính từ và trạng từ: - "cô ấy lái xe cẩn thận" = She drives carefully. (cẩn thận = adverb) - "cô ấy là người cẩn thận" = She is a careful person. (cẩn thận = adjective)

Trong tiếng Anh, hai vai trò này phải dùng hình thức khác nhau. Cần hỏi:
