Tại sao quan trọng
Người học ở Band 5-6 thường chỉ dùng zero hoặc first conditional. Band 7+ đặc trưng bởi: - Second conditional để speculate (suy đoán giả định) - Third conditional để reflect on past situations (nhìn lại điều đã không xảy ra) - Mixed conditionals để link past and present - "If" trong câu hedging và tư duy phân tích
Examiner chú ý đến việc bạn có thể chuyển đổi linh hoạt giữa các loại conditional.
PHẦN 1: ZERO VÀ FIRST CONDITIONAL — Nền tảng
Zero conditional — sự thật, quy luật
If + present simple, present simple
Dùng khi nói về sự thật luôn đúng hoặc quy luật chung:
- If you don't sleep enough, your concentration drops.
- If a country invests in education, productivity tends to increase.
- If young people lack job opportunities, social problems inevitably follow.
Trong Speaking Part 3 khi generalise về xã hội, zero conditional nghe rất tự nhiên.
First conditional — khả năng thực tế
If + present simple, will / can / may + verb
Dùng khi nói về điều có thể xảy ra trong tương lai:
- If the government invests more in public transport, traffic congestion will decrease significantly.
- If students develop strong reading habits early, they can achieve much better academic results.
- If we don't act on climate change now, the consequences may be irreversible.
PHẦN 2: SECOND CONDITIONAL — Giả định hiện tại
If + past simple, would / could / might + verb
Đây là loại conditional quan trọng nhất cho IELTS Speaking Part 2 và Part 3.
Dùng để speculate (suy đoán, giả định):
- If I had more free time, I would probably take up a new hobby like photography.
- If the government banned private cars in city centres, people would rely more on public transport.
- If everyone had access to quality education, social inequality would be much less severe.
Dùng để trả lời câu hỏi "What would you do if...?":
Câu hỏi dạng này rất phổ biến trong Part 2 và Part 3:

"What would you do if you had a year off work?" → If I had a year off, I would travel through Southeast Asia and try to learn a new language. I might also volunteer with an environmental organisation, which is something I've always wanted to do.

"If you could change one thing about your city, what would it be?" → If I could change one thing, I would invest heavily in green spaces. I think if there were more parks and pedestrian areas, people would be both healthier and happier.
Dùng để đưa ra đề xuất/kiến nghị:
- If more companies offered flexible working hours, employee wellbeing would improve considerably.
- If the school curriculum included financial literacy, young people would make better decisions as adults.
PHẦN 3: THIRD CONDITIONAL — Nhìn lại quá khứ
If + past perfect, would have / could have / might have + past participle
Dùng khi nói về điều đã không xảy ra — "nếu ngày đó tôi đã... thì..."
Trong Part 2 — kể chuyện, reflect:
- If I had studied harder during secondary school, I might have been accepted into a better university.
- If I had taken that job opportunity, my career would have developed very differently.
- She told me that if she had known about the scholarship, she would have applied.
Trong Part 3 — phân tích vấn đề xã hội:
- If governments had invested in renewable energy twenty years ago, we would not have such a serious climate crisis today.
- If more attention had been paid to mental health in schools, many problems could have been prevented.
Third conditional trong Part 3 thể hiện khả năng critical thinking — phân tích nguyên nhân và hệ quả lịch sử.
PHẦN 4: MIXED CONDITIONAL — Liên kết quá khứ và hiện tại
Mixed conditional dùng khi nguyên nhân ở quá khứ nhưng hệ quả ảnh hưởng đến hiện tại:
If + past perfect (quá khứ hoàn thành), would + verb (hiện tại)
- If I had chosen a different career path, I would probably be doing something completely different now.
- If the government had implemented stricter environmental policies earlier, we would be in a much better position today.
- If she hadn't worked so hard in her early career, she wouldn't be where she is now.
Và ngược lại — tình huống hiện tại → hệ quả trong quá khứ:
If + past simple (hiện tại giả định), would have + past participle (quá khứ)
- If I were more ambitious by nature, I would have pursued a senior management role years ago.
- If he weren't so cautious, he would have taken that investment opportunity.
PHẦN 5: "IF" TRONG HEDGING VÀ TƯ DUY PHÂN TÍCH
Ngoài câu điều kiện truyền thống, "if" còn dùng để hedge và phân tích:
If anything — để điều chỉnh ý kiến:
- The situation has, if anything, become worse over the past decade.
- This policy if anything highlights the need for more comprehensive reform.
If you ask me — ý kiến cá nhân:
- If you ask me, the real problem lies in a lack of investment in education.
- If you ask me, working from home is only sustainable with the right infrastructure.
Even if — nhượng bộ:
- Even if this policy were implemented, I'm not sure it would be effective without public support.
- I'd still support renewable energy even if it were slightly more expensive.
As long as / Provided that — điều kiện có điều kiện:
- This approach could work, provided that sufficient funding is available.
- Remote learning can be effective, as long as students have reliable internet access.
PHẦN 6: CÁC MẪU CÂU TỰ NHIÊN CHO SPEAKING
Part 2 — Mô tả trải nghiệm hoặc sự kiện giả định:
- "I think if I had the chance to visit again, I would definitely spend more time exploring the local area."
- "If the weather had been better, we would have been able to see the view from the top."
- "I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had taken that opportunity."
Part 3 — Phân tích vấn đề:
- "If the government were to introduce free childcare, more women would be able to return to the workforce."
- "I think if more people were educated about nutrition from an early age, obesity rates would fall significantly."
- "If companies had been held accountable for their environmental impact earlier, we might not be facing such a serious climate crisis."
Lỗi thường gặp
Lỗi 1: Dùng "will" trong mệnh đề "if"
- ❌ "If it will rain tomorrow, I won't go."
- ✅ "If it rains tomorrow, I won't go."
Lỗi 2: Dùng "would" trong mệnh đề "if" của second conditional
- ❌ "If I would have more time, I would travel."
- ✅ "If I had more time, I would travel."
Lỗi 3: Nhầm second và third conditional
- ❌ "If I studied harder, I would pass the exam." (khi đang nói về kỳ thi trong quá khứ đã không vượt qua)
- ✅ "If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam."
Lỗi 4: Không hoàn thành câu conditional sau khi bắt đầu
- ❌ "If the government invested more in education... it's very important."
- ✅ "If the government invested more in education, young people would have better opportunities."
Lỗi 5: "Could of / Would of" — lỗi viết sai khi phát âm
- ❌ "I would of helped if I had known." (chỉ lỗi khi viết)
- ✅ "I would have helped if I had known."
