Tóm tắt
Adverb (trạng từ) là từ bổ sung thông tin về cách thức, mức độ, tần suất, thời gian, địa điểm cho động từ, tính từ, hoặc cả câu — và nó có thể đứng ở nhiều vị trí trong câu tuỳ thuộc vào loại adverb.
Tại sao quan trọng
Adverbs giúp câu văn chính xác và phong phú hơn đáng kể: - Phân biệt "She quickly left" và "She left" — adverb cho biết cách thức - "I always exercise in the morning" — adverb cho biết tần suất - "Unfortunately, the plan failed" — adverb bình luận cả câu
Trong IELTS: - Frequency adverbs (always, often, sometimes...) rất cần thiết trong Speaking Part 1 - Degree adverbs (very, quite, rather, extremely...) giúp diễn đạt mức độ chính xác - Sentence adverbs (However, Moreover, Furthermore...) là công cụ liên kết câu trong Writing - Đặt sai vị trí adverb là lỗi thường gặp ở Band 5-6
Định nghĩa
Adverb bổ nghĩa cho: 1. Động từ: She speaks quietly. 2. Tính từ: It's extremely cold today. 3. Adverb khác: She sang incredibly well. 4. Cả câu: Unfortunately, he didn't pass.
Cách nhận biết adverb thường gặp nhất: thêm -ly vào tính từ. - quick → quickly - careful → carefully - sudden → suddenly
Nhưng không phải tất cả adverbs đều kết thúc bằng -ly: - fast, hard, late, early, just, still, already, soon, here, there, always, never...
Chú ý bẫy: Một số từ kết thúc bằng -ly nhưng là tính từ, không phải adverb: lovely, friendly, lonely, lively, elderly, silly, cowardly → Đây là tính từ! - ❌ SAI: She speaks friendlily. - ✅ ĐÚNG: She speaks in a friendly way.
Cách dùng phổ biến
1. Manner Adverbs (Trạng từ chỉ cách thức)
Trả lời câu hỏi How? (Như thế nào?)
Subject + verb + (object) + manner adverb
- She sings beautifully.
- He works hard every day.
- The children played quietly in the corner.
- Please speak more slowly — I can't follow you.
- She carefully placed the glass on the table.
Vị trí: Thường đứng sau động từ (và tân ngữ nếu có). Có thể đứng đầu câu để nhấn mạnh.
Ví dụ cách nhận biết:
| Tính từ | Adverb |
|---|---|
| careful | carefully |
| quick | quickly |
| beautiful | beautifully |
| quiet | quietly |
| hard | hard (không đổi) |
| fast | fast (không đổi) |
| good | well (bất quy tắc!) |
Lưu ý quan trọng: "good" (tính từ) → "well" (adverb) - ❌ SAI: She sings good. - ✅ ĐÚNG: She sings well.
2. Frequency Adverbs (Trạng từ chỉ tần suất)
Trả lời câu hỏi How often? (Bao thường xuyên?)
Thang tần suất:
| Adverb | % | Ví dụ |

| rarely / seldom | ~10-20% | She rarely watches TV. |
| hardly ever | ~5% | I hardly ever eat fast food. |
| never | 0% | He never arrives on time. |
Vị trí frequency adverbs:
Subject + frequency adverb + main verb
Subject + be + frequency adverb
- I always drink coffee in the morning. (trước động từ thường)
- She is never late. (sau "be")
- We have often discussed this issue. (sau auxiliary)
Lỗi phổ biến nhất: Đặt frequency adverb SAU động từ thường hoặc ĐẦU câu không phù hợp: - ❌ SAI: I drink always coffee in the morning. - ✅ ĐÚNG: I always drink coffee in the morning.
3. Degree Adverbs (Trạng từ chỉ mức độ)
Bổ nghĩa cho tính từ hoặc adverb khác, trả lời How much / To what extent?

| slightly / barely | Rất ít, vừa đủ | She's slightly taller than me. |
- The problem is incredibly complex.
- She speaks English fairly fluently.

6. Sentence Adverbs (Trạng từ bình luận cả câu)

Sentence adverb, + subject + verb...

| Thái độ | Unfortunately, Fortunately, Surprisingly, Interestingly | Unfortunately, many people overlook this. |
| Minh hoạ | For example, For instance, Namely | For instance, cities like Tokyo have... |
Lưu ý cấu trúc: Khi dùng linking adverbs nối hai mệnh đề: - Dùng dấu chấm phẩy hoặc chấm, không dùng dấu phẩy đơn: - ❌ SAI: The plan was good, however it was too expensive. - ✅ ĐÚNG: The plan was good. However, it was too expensive. - ✅ ĐÚNG: The plan was good; however, it was too expensive.

Lưu ý cho người học Việt Nam
Trong tiếng Việt, cùng một từ có thể đóng nhiều vai trò: - "cô ấy chạy nhanh" (nhanh → mô tả động từ) - "cô ấy nhanh lắm" (nhanh → tính từ)
Trong tiếng Anh, cần phân biệt rõ: - "She runs quickly." (adverb — mô tả động từ, thêm -ly) - "She is quick." (adjective — mô tả danh từ/chủ ngữ, không thêm -ly)
Mẹo nhớ vị trí frequency adverbs (quan trọng nhất): - Trước động từ thường: I always walk. - Sau "be": She is always on time. - Sau auxiliary: He has never been late.
