Tóm tắt

Nêu được kết quả rõ ràng là nửa còn lại của việc lập luận (nửa kia là đưa ra lý do — xem bài Adding Reasons Clearly). Nhưng đa số thí sinh chỉ biết mỗi "so" — và lặp lại đến mức câu nghe trẻ con. Dùng đúng và đa dạng result connectors là điểm khác biệt giữa Band 6 và Band 7+:

Quy tắc cốt lõi: "so" là liên từ (dùng dấu phẩy), còn "therefore / consequently / as a result" là trạng từ (dùng dấu chấm hoặc chấm phẩy — KHÔNG phải dấu phẩy). Nhầm chỗ này là lỗi câu chạy (run-on) phổ biến nhất.

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong Writing Task 2, một đoạn body tốt đi theo chuỗi Claim → Reason → Result/Implication ("so what?"). Trong Speaking Part 3, examiner muốn nghe bạn theo đuổi một ý đến tận kết quả, không bỏ lửng.

⚠ Writing Task 1 (Academic) thì KHÁC: nhiệm vụ là mô tả số liệu khách quan, KHÔNG suy diễn nhân–quả. Chỉ dùng result connector ("so", "resulting in") khi chính biểu đồ/đề bài nêu rõ quan hệ nguyên nhân–kết quả (vd sơ đồ quá trình). Nếu chỉ thấy hai đường cùng tăng, hãy mô tả tương quan ("both rose over the period"), đừng viết "A làm B tăng".

Result connectors được chấm ở hai tiêu chí: Grammatical Range (biết nhiều cấu trúc) và Coherence/Cohesion (nối ý mạch lạc, đúng dấu câu). Lặp "so... so... so..." kéo tụt cả hai.

NHÓM 1: SO — liên từ kết quả cơ bản (+ clause)

"So" là coordinating conjunction: nối hai mệnh đề độc lập, có dấu phẩy đứng trước.

[Independent clause], so [independent clause]

• Living costs have risen sharply, so many young people are delaying buying a home.
• The data was incomplete, so the researchers repeated the experiment.

"So" tự nhiên, hơi thân mật — tuyệt vời cho Speaking, dùng được trong Writing nhưng đừng lạm dụng (Writing học thuật thích therefore/consequently hơn).

⚠ Đừng nhầm với "so that" (mục đích): "so that" = để mà (purpose), KHÔNG phải kết quả. - He saved money so that he could travel. (mục đích — để đi du lịch) - He saved money, so he could travel. (kết quả — vì thế anh ấy đã có thể đi)

NHÓM 2: THEREFORE, CONSEQUENTLY, AS A RESULT — trạng từ liên kết (formal)

Đây là conjunctive adverbs — chúng KHÔNG nối hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy. Phải dùng dấu chấm hoặc dấu chấm phẩy, và có dấu phẩy sau chúng.

"Therefore/thus" nghiêng về kết luận logic; "consequently/as a result" nghiêng về **hệ quả thực tế xảy ra theo thời gian". Cả nhóm đều formal — lý tưởng cho Writing Task 2.

NHÓM 3: SO...THAT / SUCH...THAT — cấu trúc nhấn mạnh kết quả

Khi muốn nhấn mạnh mức độ dẫn tới kết quả, dùng cấu trúc này trong một câu.

SO + tính từ / trạng từ + THAT

... so + [adj/adv] + that + [result clause]

• The exam was so difficult that nearly half the candidates failed.
• Prices rose so rapidly that ordinary families could no longer keep up.

SUCH + (a/an) + (tính từ) + danh từ + THAT

... such + (a/an) + [adj] + [noun] + that + [result clause]

• It was such a popular policy that other countries quickly copied it.
• They were such convincing arguments that the committee changed its decision.

SO MUCH / SO MANY + danh từ + THAT

• There was so much demand that the product sold out within hours.
• So many people applied that the deadline had to be extended.

Quy tắc phân biệt: so + tính từ (so difficult), such + (mạo từ) + danh từ (such a problem). Đây là điểm ngữ pháp band 6.5–7.0 examiner để ý.

NHÓM 4: CỤM PHÂN TỪ & GIỚI TỪ — nối kết quả gọn gàng

Cách nâng cao để tránh lúc nào cũng tách thành câu mới:

"Resulting in / leading to" là participle clause — nối mượt vào mệnh đề trước mà không cần thêm chủ ngữ. Rất mạnh trong Writing Task 2 và Speaking. (Ở Task 1 chỉ dùng khi biểu đồ/đề thực sự thể hiện nhân–quả — xem cảnh báo ở mục "Tại sao quan trọng".)

WRITING — chuỗi kết quả trong Task 2

Một đoạn body thuyết phục thường khép lại bằng kết quả / hệ quả để trả lời câu hỏi "so what?".

Ví dụ đoạn văn hoàn chỉnh:

Singapore's integrated transit network, for instance, has kept car ownership remarkably low; consequently, the city enjoys cleaner air than many comparable metropolises. This is why sustained investment in public transport should be a priority for fast-growing cities."

Phân tích: Claim (public transport benefits) → Reason (fewer cars) → Result (as a result + consequently) → Example (Singapore) → Implication (this is why). Bốn cách nối kết quả khác nhau trong một đoạn.

SPEAKING — nêu kết quả tự nhiên trong Part 1 & 3

Khi nói, đừng dùng "thus/hence" — nghe cứng như đọc văn. Chọn cách tự nhiên hơn:

Writing (trang trọng)	Speaking (tự nhiên)
Therefore / Consequently	So... / That's why...
As a result	Because of that... / So in the end...
This resulted in	...and that meant... / ...which led to...
Hence	So basically...

Part 3 example: - Q: "Why are fewer young people reading newspapers?" - ✅ "Well, most news is free online now and updates instantly, so there's not much reason to buy a paper. And that means print circulation has been falling for years — which is why a lot of newspapers have moved entirely to digital. So in the end, it's really just people following convenience."

Lưu ý: trong Speaking, dùng một "so" mở đầu thì ổn, nhưng nếu mỗi câu đều bắt đầu bằng "so" thì xen kẽ "that's why / which means / because of that".

Lỗi thường gặp

Lỗi 1: Câu chạy với "therefore" (lỗi phổ biến nhất của người Việt)

• ❌ Prices increased, therefore people bought less.
• ✅ Prices increased. Therefore, people bought less.
• ✅ Prices increased; therefore, people bought less.

"Therefore" KHÔNG phải liên từ — không nối được hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy. Xem thêm bài Run-On Sentences.

Lỗi 2: Lặp "so" quá nhiều

• ❌ "...so... so... so..."
• ✅ Xen kẽ: so / therefore / as a result / which is why / resulting in

Lỗi 3: Nhầm "so" (kết quả) với "so that" (mục đích)

• ❌ I studied hard so that I passed. (sai nghĩa — diễn tả kết quả mà dùng cấu trúc mục đích)
• ✅ I studied hard, so I passed. (kết quả)
• ✅ I studied hard so that I could pass. (mục đích — thường có could/would/can)

Lỗi 4: Nhầm "so" với "such"

• ❌ It was so a big problem that we panicked.
• ✅ It was such a big problem that we panicked. (such + a + adj + noun)
• ✅ The problem was so big that we panicked. (so + adj)

Lỗi 5: Dùng "so" đầu câu trong Writing học thuật

• ⚠ "So" mở đầu câu nghe thân mật — trong Writing Task 2 nên thay bằng Therefore / Consequently / As a result.

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, mỗi luận điểm cần được hỗ trợ bằng lý do rõ ràng. Một lý do được trình bày tốt gồm: Claim (luận điểm) + Reason (lý do) + Evidence/Example (bằng chứng). Trong Speaking Part 3, examiner đánh giá khả năng bạn giải thích, lập luận, và defend quan điểm.

Nếu chỉ biết dùng "because", câu viết sẽ đơn điệu và bị trừ điểm Grammatical Range.

"Since" ngụ ý lý do đã được công nhận chung — phổ biến trong IELTS Writing học thuật.

AS — trang trọng, thường đứng đầu câu

As [S + V], [Main clause]

• As urban populations continue to grow, pressure on infrastructure intensifies.
• As the evidence suggests, early intervention is far more effective than later treatment.

"As" trang trọng hơn "because" một chút — phù hợp Writing Task 2 hơn Speaking.

"Due to" thường dùng để giải thích kết quả đã xảy ra — phổ biến trong Task 1 và Task 2 Writing.

NHÓM 3: GIVEN THAT, SEEING AS — trang trọng và nâng cao (+ clause)

GIVEN THAT — vì (đã biết rằng), lý do dựa trên thực tế đã được thiết lập

• Given that climate change poses an existential threat, immediate action is not optional.
• The decision seems reasonable, given that resources are severely limited.

"Given that" = "considering the fact that" — ngụ ý lý do là thực tế đã rõ, không cần tranh luận.

SEEING AS / SEEING THAT — vì, bởi vì (thân mật hơn given that)

Seeing as [S + V], [Main clause]

• Seeing as you've already started the project, it makes sense to continue.
• Seeing as the economy is struggling, job creation should be the priority.

"Seeing as" trang trọng hơn "because" nhưng ít formal hơn "given that" — phù hợp Speaking Part 3.

IN THAT — theo nghĩa rằng, ở chỗ (giải thích cụ thể hơn)

• The policy is flawed in that it fails to address the root causes of poverty.
• This approach is effective in that it targets the most vulnerable populations directly.

"In that" = "in the sense that / because specifically" — rất học thuật, phù hợp Task 2.

NHÓM 4: RESULT CONNECTORS — kết quả của lý do (đứng đầu câu)

Khi muốn bắt đầu câu bằng kết quả rồi mới nêu lý do ngầm định, dùng:

Pattern này rất hữu ích trong Writing Task 2 để tách luận điểm và lý do:

• Young people today report higher levels of anxiety than previous generations. The reason for this is partly the pressure of social media comparison and partly the economic uncertainty they face.

• Many students perform poorly in exams despite spending long hours studying. This can be attributed to ineffective study techniques rather than a lack of effort.

Trong Speaking Part 3, đưa lý do theo kiểu thân mật hơn — tránh quá cứng nhắc:

On top of that, political messaging is rarely targeted at younger demographics in a way that resonates with them."
