Tóm tắt

Tương phản là một trong những quan hệ ý nghĩa được examiner để ý nhất. Biết một từ ("but") thì đủ Band 5; biết chọn đúng connector theo ngữ cảnh và dùng đúng dấu câu mới lên Band 7. Phân nhóm theo cấu trúc đi sau:

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong Writing Task 2 (đặc biệt discussion / advantages-disadvantages), tương phản là xương sống: nêu một mặt rồi phản biện mặt kia. Trong Speaking Part 3, examiner thường hỏi "some people think X, others think Y" — bạn cần nối hai quan điểm trái chiều mượt mà. Dùng đa dạng contrast connectors ăn điểm cả Grammatical Range lẫn Coherence & Cohesion.

⚠ KHÔNG kết hợp với "but": ❌ Although it was late, but he kept working. → ✅ Although it was late, he kept working.

NHÓM 3: DESPITE, IN SPITE OF — giới từ (+ noun / V-ing)

NHÓM 4: HOWEVER, NEVERTHELESS, NONETHELESS — trạng từ liên kết (formal)

Giống nhóm result connectors: KHÔNG nối hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy — phải dùng dấu chấm hoặc chấm phẩy, và có dấu phẩy sau.

• Renewable energy is expensive to install. However, it pays off over time.
• The evidence was limited; nevertheless, the conclusion seemed reasonable.

"Nevertheless / nonetheless" = "however" nhưng trang trọng hơn, nhấn mạnh "dù vậy vẫn". Lý tưởng cho Writing Task 2.

NHÓM 5: ON THE ONE HAND... ON THE OTHER HAND — trình bày hai chiều

Dùng khi muốn cân nhắc hai mặt (rất hợp Part 3 và discussion essay):

• On the one hand, tourism boosts local economies. On the other hand, it can damage the environment and erode local culture.

Lỗi 3: "However" nối câu bằng dấu phẩy (câu chạy)

• ❌ It was raining, however we went out.
• ✅ It was raining. However, we went out.
• ✅ It was raining; however, we went out.

Lỗi 4: Nhầm "while" (tương phản) với "while" (thời gian)

• "While" vừa nghĩa "trong khi" (thời gian) vừa "trong khi đó / ngược lại" (tương phản) — ngữ cảnh quyết định. Trong tương phản: City jobs pay more, while rural jobs offer a calmer lifestyle.

Tại sao quan trọng

Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, mỗi luận điểm cần được hỗ trợ bằng lý do rõ ràng. Một lý do được trình bày tốt gồm: Claim (luận điểm) + Reason (lý do) + Evidence/Example (bằng chứng). Trong Speaking Part 3, examiner đánh giá khả năng bạn giải thích, lập luận, và defend quan điểm.

Nếu chỉ biết dùng "because", câu viết sẽ đơn điệu và bị trừ điểm Grammatical Range.

"Since" ngụ ý lý do đã được công nhận chung — phổ biến trong IELTS Writing học thuật.

AS — trang trọng, thường đứng đầu câu

As [S + V], [Main clause]

• As urban populations continue to grow, pressure on infrastructure intensifies.
• As the evidence suggests, early intervention is far more effective than later treatment.

"As" trang trọng hơn "because" một chút — phù hợp Writing Task 2 hơn Speaking.

BECAUSE OF — phổ biến nhất, không trang trọng lắm

DUE TO — trang trọng, thường gặp trong học thuật

"Due to" thường dùng để giải thích kết quả đã xảy ra — phổ biến trong Task 1 và Task 2 Writing.

OWING TO — rất trang trọng, thường đứng đầu câu

• Owing to a significant rise in demand, manufacturers have had to increase production.

NHÓM 3: GIVEN THAT, SEEING AS — trang trọng và nâng cao (+ clause)

GIVEN THAT — vì (đã biết rằng), lý do dựa trên thực tế đã được thiết lập

Given that [S + V], [Main clause]

• Given that climate change poses an existential threat, immediate action is not optional.
• The decision seems reasonable, given that resources are severely limited.
• Given that many students now learn online, schools need to adapt their teaching methods.

"Given that" = "considering the fact that" — ngụ ý lý do là thực tế đã rõ, không cần tranh luận.

SEEING AS / SEEING THAT — vì, bởi vì (thân mật hơn given that)

Seeing as [S + V], [Main clause]

• Seeing as you've already started the project, it makes sense to continue.
• Seeing as the economy is struggling, job creation should be the priority.

"Seeing as" trang trọng hơn "because" nhưng ít formal hơn "given that" — phù hợp Speaking Part 3.

IN THAT — theo nghĩa rằng, ở chỗ (giải thích cụ thể hơn)

[Main clause] in that [S + V]

• The policy is flawed in that it fails to address the root causes of poverty.
• This approach is effective in that it targets the most vulnerable populations directly.

"In that" = "in the sense that / because specifically" — rất học thuật, phù hợp Task 2.

NHÓM 4: RESULT CONNECTORS — kết quả của lý do (đứng đầu câu)

Khi muốn bắt đầu câu bằng kết quả rồi mới nêu lý do ngầm định, dùng:

NHÓM 5: "THIS IS BECAUSE..." — giải thích nguyên nhân sau khi nêu luận điểm

Pattern này rất hữu ích trong Writing Task 2 để tách luận điểm và lý do:

[Claim/Statement]. This is because [S + V].
[Claim/Statement]. The reason (for this) is that [S + V].
[Claim/Statement]. One key reason is that [S + V].
[Claim/Statement]. This can be attributed to [noun phrase].

• Obesity rates have risen sharply in recent decades. This is because diets have become increasingly dominated by processed, calorie-dense foods while physical activity has declined.

• Young people today report higher levels of anxiety than previous generations. The reason for this is partly the pressure of social media comparison and partly the economic uncertainty they face.

• Many students perform poorly in exams despite spending long hours studying. This can be attributed to ineffective study techniques rather than a lack of effort.

Trong Speaking Part 3, đưa lý do theo kiểu thân mật hơn — tránh quá cứng nhắc:
